Docosahexaenoate (C22:6w3) [Entitic substance] in Red Blood Cells
Active
Part Description
LP33078-4 Docosahexaenoate
Docosahexaenoate (DHA) is one of the essential polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids that is primarily obtained by ingesting fatty fish including salmon, mackerel, tuna, herring, and sardines.[https://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/Omega3FattyAcids-HealthProfessional/] There are many benefits derived from eating healthy levels of DHA including a reduction of chronic inflammation, atherosclerosis, hypertension, arthritis, depression, adult-onset diabetes mellitus, myocardial infarction, thrombosis, and some cancers. DHA is important in brain development of infants and in maintaining normal brain function in adults. Studies have demonstrated that infants who drink DHA-fortified formula have higher visual acuity than infants who drink unfortified formula. Deficiencies of DHA have been associated with fetal alcohol syndrome, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, cystic fibrosis, phenylketonuria, unipolar depression, aggressive hostility, adrenoleukodystrophy, cognitive decline in aging individuals, and the onset of sporadic Alzheimer's disease. Patients who consume 200 mg/day of DHA have a 50% reduction in the incidence of sudden cardiac arrest. PMID: 10479465
