Human papilloma virus 16 DNA [Presence] in Anorectal specimen by Probe and signal amplification method
Active
Term Description
Men who are at high risk for sexually transmitted diseases for HPV-related anal cancer may be tested similar to a cervical Pap smear where the anal lining is swabbed and cells examined microscopically. HPV DNA tests can also be performed on these samples and similarly, positive results need to be followed up with further testing, including a more thorough exam and possible biopsy. HPV type 16 and 18 are the most common carcinogenic HPV types, with HPV type 16 as the greatest risk for HPV persistence, along with other risk factors of increasing age, smoking, immunosuppression, inflammation, hormones and genetic factors. This term was created for, but not limited in use to, the cobas HPV test kit which uses PCR and nucleic acid hybridization for the detection of 14 high-risk (HR) HPV types.
