Term Description
Measuring the content of hemoglobin in reticulocytes may be a sensitive marker in detecting iron-deficient erythropoiesis. This term was created for, but not limited in use to the SIEMENS ADVIA® 2120/2120i Hematology Systems. PMID: 10084285
Part Descriptions
LP174541-5 Reticulocytes.hypochromic
Reticulocytes are immature red blood cells, typically composing about 1% of the red cells in the human body. Reticulocytes develop and mature in the red bone marrow and then circulate for about a day in the blood stream before developing into mature red blood cells. Like mature red blood cells, reticulocytes do not have a cell nucleus. They are called reticulocytes because of a reticular (mesh-like) network of ribosomal RNA that becomes visible under a microscope with certain stains such as new methylene blue.

LP174541-5 Reticulocytes.hypochromic
Hypochromic anemia is a generic term for any type of anemia in which the red blood cells (erythrocytes) are paler than normal. (Hypo- refers to less, and chromic means color.) A normal red blood cell will have an area of pallor in the center of it; in hypochromic cells, this area of central pallor is increased. This decrease in redness is due to a disproportionate reduction of red cell hemoglobin (the pigment that imparts the red color) in proportion to the volume of the cell. The most common causes of this kind of anemia are iron deficiency and thalassemia.
