Part Descriptions
LP185688-1 Klebsiella pneumoniae phoE gene
Klebsiella pneumoniae is a common pathogen in hospital-acquired respiratory infections and antibiotic-resistant strains of K pneumoniae have been identified in local outbreaks. This microorganism has several porins in its outer membrane that regulate the entry of antibiotics into the cell, one of which is phosphate-regulated PhoE. PhoE is encoded by the gene phoE and the expression of this porin has been associated with antibiotic resistance. Detection of the phoE gene in a clinical specimen can identify K pneumoniae as one of the pathogens responsible for infection. PMID: 17005822

LP185684-0 Candida albicans its gene
Candida albicans is an opportunistic fungal pathogen that can cause severe infections in immunosuppressed patients. The its genes are conserved across candida species, but specific internal sequences have enough variation to be able to distinguish amongst species. One such internal its sequence is specific for C albicans, and detecting this gene sequence in a clinical specimen can help identify C albicans as the causative organism in a particular infection.
Term Description

Source: Regenstrief LOINC
Part Descriptions
LP189395-9 Bacterial 16S rRNA
Sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene is commonly used for taxonomic classification and identification of bacteria. The 16S gene is approximately 1500bp long and is universal in bacteria, allowing its relationships to be measured among all bacteria. Because it is universal among all bacteria, detection of 16S RNA can also be used to estimate bacterial load. The 16S sequence has a role in identifying bacteria that are atypical or rare that are unable to be identified by phenotypic tests alone. In general there is not enough variation in 16S sequence for its use in distinguishing strains for epidemiological purposes.

- Change Reason
- The PrThr property is used for LOINC terms whose results are reported using an ordered categorical scale, regardless of whether or not an internal threshold was used to make that determination. This change was approved by the Laboratory LOINC Committee in June 2016.; Removed parentheses around gene name in Component based on the current LOINC model.; ; Updated System from "Isolate" and Method from "Probe.amp.tar" according to the new, more sustainable model for LOINC molecular resistance terms [Approved by LOINC Laboratory Committee in June 2018].

48814-8 Vancomycin resistance vanA gene [Presence] by Molecular method
Part Descriptions
LP63185-0 Bacterial vancomycin resistance vanA gene
This test is used for the detection of vancomycin resistance genes by multiplex PCR. Vancomycin is a glycopeptide antibiotic used to treat various infections, primarily those caused by gram-positive bacteria. Vancomycin resistance genes were first found in enterococci, and more recently have been found in Staphylococcus aureus. The emergence of vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) and vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (VRSA) in hospitalized patients has lead to a restricted use of vancomycin. To date, multiple vancomycin resistance genes have been characterized, including: vanA, vanB, vanC (vanC-1, vanC-2, vanC-3), and VanD. Of the six van types, vanA and vanB are the most resistant to vancomycin, and are the two types that cause VRSA. PMID: 24983424
