LP16800-2 Aluminum
Aluminium (Al) is a metal which is distributed throughout our environment. It has been used since approximately 1887. Al is widely used in multiple industries and consumer products. It has no known function in biology. Al usually enters the human body via cooking utensils or pharmicological agents such as antacids (Al (OH)3 )and antiperspirants. Aluminum salts are remarkably nontoxic, aluminum sulfate having an LD50 of 6207 mg/kg (oral, mouse), which corresponds to 500 grams for an 80 kg (180 lb) person. Aluminum is excreted by filtration by the glomeruli of the kidney. Patients in renal failure lose the ability to clear aluminum, and aluminum toxicity may be a concern. Aluminum accumulates in the blood and binds to proteins such as albumin, and then distributed throughout the body.Because aluminum competes with calcium for absorption, increased amounts of dietary aluminum may contribute to the reduced skeletal mineralization (osteopenia) observed in preterm infants and infants with growth retardation. In very high doses, aluminum is associated with altered function of the blood-brain barrier. A small percentage of people are allergic to aluminum and experience contact dermatitis, digestive disorders, vomiting or other symptoms upon contact or ingestion of products containing aluminum. In those without allergies, aluminum is not as toxic as heavy metals, but there is evidence of some toxicity if consumed in amounts greater than 40 mg/day per kg of body mass. Aluminum is classified as a non-carcinogen by the US Department of Health and Human Services. In case of suspected sudden intake of a large amount of aluminum, deferoxamine mesylate may be given to help eliminate it from the body by chelation. (Tietz: Clinical Guide to Laboratory Tests, Fourth Edition)
The mechanism of how the neurotoxicity of AI occurs is still unclear. Evidence suggests that oxidative stress and inflammatory processes lead to cell death. As a neurotoxin, Al is considered has been linked to the development of neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease (AD), dementia, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Parkinsonism and even Gulf war syndrome. PMID: 27479193 (for human medicine)
Veterinary Medicine:
In veterinary medicine, the impact of aluminum toxicity is similar. An animal proven to have aluminum toxicity from an ingested foreign body had symptoms of muscle twitching and convulsions during exercise, which worsened to weakened limbs and coma until the source of the toxicity was removed. PMID: 23609067

5584-8 Arsenic [Mass/mass] in Hair
Part Descriptions
LP16802-8 Arsenic
Arsenic (As, CAS No. 7440-38-2) is a metalloid that exists in both inorganic and organic forms in the environment and is classified as a human carcinogen by the U.S. EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) and IARC (International Agency for Research in Cancer). Arsenic levels are naturally higher in certain geographical areas, including regions of Asia, China, Chile, Mexico and United States. PMID: 27894683 Exposure to toxic levels of arsenic, mainly via ingestion of As contaminated water and food, occur in these areas as well as near hazardous waste sites or in the workplace. Chronic exposure to low level of arsenic can cause skin lesions (e.g. melanosis, leucomelanosis, and keratosis), neurological effects, high blood pressure, diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, and cancers typically involving the skin, lung, and bladder. PMID: 19190988 High exposure levels to arsenic can cause death.
Veterinary Medicine:
Arsenic is seldom reported since the concentrations normally found in animal feeds are significantly less than the toxic dietary concentration. If arsenic poisoning occurs, signs of intoxication include reduce feed intake and depressed growth. Some animal species can have convulsions and incoordination followed by posterior paresis and quadriplegia, blindness and decreased hemoglobin. In pigs, cases of arsenic poisoning usually arise from the use of organic arsenical growth-promoting feed additives.

76653-5 Barium [Mass/mass] in Hair
Part Descriptions
LP16803-6 Barium
Barium, a soft silvery metallic alkaline earth metal, reacts with water and carbon dioxide and is not found as a free element. The most common naturally occurring minerals are the very insoluble barium sulfate, BaSO4 (barite), and barium carbonate, BaCO3 (witherite). The metal is used to scavenge air in vacuum tubes, as a component of high-temperature superconductors and electroceramics, and is added to steel and cast iron. Water-soluble barium compounds are poisonous. At low doses, barium ions act as a muscle stimulant, whereas higher doses affect the nervous system, causing cardiac irregularities, tremors, weakness, anxiety, dyspnea and paralysis. Barium ions also target the eyes, immune system, heart, respiratory system, and skin, and may cause blindness and sensitization.

LP16805-1 Beryllium
Beryllium (Be) exposure is an industrial hazard for workers in metal extraction, rocket bases, nuclear plants, refining plants, or where coal is burned extensively. Urine excretion is variable and does not correlate with disease. Toxicity from beryllium exposure is latent and chronic inhalation will lead to berylliosis, a chronic allergic-type lung response and chronic lung disease. Beryllium enters the body through the lungs and toxicity has been associated with increased incidence of pulmonary cancers. [Tietz]

[Tietz]

60057-7 Bismuth [Mass/mass] in Hair
Part Descriptions
LP16806-9 Bismuth
Bismuth is a chemical element (symbol Bi and atomic number 83). This heavy, brittle, white crystalline trivalent poor metal has a pink tinge and chemically resembles arsenic and antimony. Of all the metals, it is the most naturally diamagnetic, and only mercury has less thermal conductivity. Lead -free bismuth compounds are used in cosmetics and in medical procedures. Bismuth and most of its compounds are less toxic compared to other heavy metals (lead, antimony, etc.) and it is not bio-accumulative. Bismuth poisoning exists and mostly affects the kidney, liver, and bladder. Skin and respiratory irritation can also follow exposure to respective organs. As with lead, overexposure to bismuth can result in the formation of a black deposit on the gingiva, known as a bismuth line.

77178-2 Boron [Mass/mass] in Hair
Term Description
Hair levels of iron, boron, calcium, and zinc are often elevated together with lead.
Part Descriptions
LP16808-5 Boron
Boron is a chemical element with atomic number 5 and the chemical symbol B. A trivalent metalloid element, boron occurs abundantly in the ore borax. Boron is never found free in nature. Several allotropes of boron exist; amorphous boron is a brown powder, though metallic (crystalline) boron is black, hard (9.3 on Mohs' scale), and a weak conductor at room temperature. Elemental boron is used as a dopant in the semiconductor industry, while boron compounds play important roles as light structural materals, nontoxic insecticides and preservatives, and reagents for chemical synthesis. Boron is an essential plant nutrient, and as an ultratrace mineral is necessary for the optimal health of animals, though its physiological role in animals is poorly understood. Elemental boron, boron oxide, boric acid, borates, and many organoboron compounds are nontoxic to humans and animals (with toxicity similar to that of table salt).

50836-6 Calcium [Moles/mass] in Hair
Part Descriptions
LP15257-6 Calcium
Calcium is the most plentiful mineral in the human body. Ninety-nine percent is stored in the bones and teeth where it provides structure and functionality. The remaining 1% of the body's calcium is necessary for vascular contraction and vasodilation, muscle function, nerve transmission, intracellular signaling, and hormonal secretion. Serum calcium levels do not fluctuate in response to dietary intake. Bone tissue is the reservoir for calcium and helps to maintain concentrations in the blood, the muscle, and intercellular fluids. As humans age, the bone is constantly being laid down and reabsorbed. In growing children, bone formation exceeds that of bone resorption. In young and middle-aged adults, the bone formation and resorption is about equal. In older adults, especially in post-menopausal women, bone loss exceeds that of bone formation, which is why their risk for osteoporosis continues to increase as they age.[https://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/Calcium-HealthProfessional/]

Part Descriptions
LP14368-2 Cobalt
Cobalt is a chemical element used to manufacture hard metal alloys, glass, paints and fertilizers. It is also an essential element supplied through dietary intake. High levels of cobalt in patients due to toxic ingestion or occupational exposure can cause erythrocytosis, cardiomyopathy, allergic dermatitis, pulmonary fibrosis, cough and dyspnea.
Veterinary Medicine:
Low levels of cobalt are known to cause anemia in pigs. Daily doses of cobalt sulphate can induce myocardial damage in pigs, but this can be prevented by intramuscular administration of sodium selenite and alpha-tocopherol on previous day.

50845-7 Cobalt [Moles/mass] in Hair

LP16814-3 Copper
Copper analysis is used to diagnose toxicity and metabolism disorders, such as Wilson's disease and Menkes syndrome.
Veterinary Medicine:
Copper sulphate is often added to pig feed to improve weight gain. If the feed is not uniformily mixed, pigs may be exposed to toxic levels of copper. The first indication of toxicity is a rise in blood copper concentration. The primary clinical signs include jaundice, dullness, weakness, anemia, trembling and respiratory distress.

76657-6 Iodine [Mass/mass] in Hair
Part Descriptions
LP15157-8 Iodine
A nonmetallic element of the halogen group that is represented by the atomic symbol I, atomic number 53, and atomic weight of 126.90. It is a nutritionally essential element, especially important in thyroid hormone synthesis. In solution, it has anti-infective properties and is used topically.
Source: National Library of Medicine, MeSH 2006
LP15157-8 Iodine
A nonmetallic element (I), atomic number 53, of the halogen group, iodine and compounds are primarily used in nutrition, and industrially in the production of acetic acid and certain polymers. It is an essential element, especially important in thyroid hormone synthesis. In solution, it has anti-infective properties and is used topically and many X-ray contrast materials. A number of iodine radioisotopes are also used in medical applications. In areas where there is little iodine in the diet, typically remote inland areas and semi-arid equatorial climates where no marine foods are eaten, iodine deficiency gives rise to hypothyroidism, symptoms of which are extreme fatigue, goiter, mental slowing, depression, weight gain, and low basal body temperatures. Elemental iodine (I2) is toxic if taken orally. The lethal dose for an adult human is 30 mg/kg, which is about 2.1-2.4 grams. Some people develop a hypersensitivity to iodine-containing products and foods.

2497-6 Iron [Mass/mass] in Hair
Part Descriptions
LP15677-5 Iron
Iron homeostasis diseases are common and may be attributed to iron deficiency or iron overload. Iron deficiency may be due to increased loss or inadequate absorption. Iron overload occurs when the erythropoiesis is normal, but the iron exceeds the iron binding capacity of transferrin. Iron overload may also occur when catabolism of red cells occurs. Iron levels are used to help diagnose specific types of anemia. Iron levels are low in iron deficiency anemia and anemia of chronic disease. Iron levels are normal to increased in sideroblastic anemia and increased in hemolytic anemias, hemochromatosis, and acute liver disease. Normal to decreased iron levels are seen with protein depletion. Other tests used as iron status indicators include ferritin, transferrin, TIBC, and iron saturation.(Jacobs and DeMott Laboratory Test Handbook, 5th edition, DS Jacobs, WR DeMott and DK Oxley, 2001.)
In veterinary toxicology, one of the best known types of iron poisoning is in young piglets infected with an iron dextran preparation for the prevention of postnatal anemia. However, iron intoxication can also occur in other animal species.

5673-9 Lead [Mass/mass] in Hair
Part Descriptions
LP14259-3 Lead
Lead is toxic to many organs and tissues including the heart, bones, intestines, kidneys, and reproductive and nervous systems. It interferes with the development of the nervous system and is particularly toxic to children, causing potentially permanent learning and behavior disorders. Symptoms include abdominal pain, confusion, headache, anemia, irritability, and in severe cases seizures, coma, and death. Routes of exposure include contaminated air, water, soil, food, and consumer products. Occupational exposure is a common cause of lead poisoning in adults. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) estimates that more than 3 million workers in the United States are potentially exposed to lead in the workplace. One of the largest threats to children is lead paint that exists in many older homes. Blood lead levels screen for lead poisoning and monitor treatment as well. The Centers for Disease Control (US) has set the standard elevated blood lead level for adults to be 10 µg/dl of the whole blood. For children the number is set much lower at 5 µg/dl of blood as of 2012 down from a previous 10 µg/dl. The major treatments are removal of the source of lead and chelation therapy. [Wikipedia: Lead_poisoning] Both capillary and venous blood specimens are used for lead testing and they have different reference ranges, so it is important to distinguish the specimen type for both clinical and public health reporting. Capillary samples are more likely to be contaminated by environmental residues present on the skin. Venous blood collected using evacuated tubes and needles certified as lead-free is preferred (NCCLS.2001), however obtaining venous samples from pediatric patients may be be difficult, capillary blood from a finger puncture may be used for screening purposes. If an elevated lead level is detected in capillary blood, a second test on a venous sample is necessary.

3718-4 Lithium [Mass/mass] in Hair
Part Descriptions
LP16175-9 Lithium
Lithium, symbol Li and atomic number 3, is one of only four elements thought to have been created in the first few seconds following the "Big Bang" nucleosynthesis. It is in group 1 of the periodic table, among the alkali metals and is the lightest solid element. Lithium is a soft, silver white metal that does not exist on earth in its pure form. Lithium reacts with oxygen to form black lithium oxide (Li2 O). It therefore has to be stored under the cover of oil to stop its oxidation. Lithium metal is used primarily in heat-transfer applicationns such as batteries (mainly cell phone and camera batteries), household appliances (toasters and microwaves) and in high performance alloys (aircraft construction).

LP16175-9 Lithium
Lithium is useful in the treatment of bipolar disorder. Lithium salts may also be helpful for related diagnoses, such as schizoaffective disorder and cyclic major depression. The active part of these salts is the lithium ion Li+. They may increase the risk of developing Ebstein's cardiac anomaly in infants born to women who take lithium during the first trimester of pregnancy. Lithium has also been researched as a possible treatment for cluster headaches.

16172-9 Magnesium [Mass/mass] in Hair
Part Descriptions
LP14343-5 Magnesium
Magnesium salts are essential in nutrition, being required for the activity of many enzymes, especially those concerned with oxidative phosphorylation. Physiologically, it exists as an ion in the body. It is a component of both intra- and extracellular fluids and is excreted in the urine and feces. Deficiency causes irritability of the nervous system with tetany, vasodilatation, convulsions, tremors, depression, and psychotic behavior. Magnesium ion in large amounts is an ionic laxative, and magnesium sulfate (Epsom salts) is sometimes used for this purpose. So-called "milk of magnesia" is a water suspension of one of the few insoluble magnesium compounds, magnesium hydroxide; the undissolved particles give rise to its appearance and name. Milk of magnesia is a mild base, and is commonly used as an antacid.

Very high amounts can be fed to animals with no ill effects if the kidneys are functioning. Inappetance is the major practical problem encountered
from excessive dietary magnesium. Because only a fraction of dietary magnesium is generally absorbed, high amounts of magnesium in the diet can cause an osmotic diarrhea in the animal.
This is usually of greater concern in poultry houses where the water content of manure can be a major concern to producers but does not necessarily impact the health of the birds.

LP16827-5 Manganese
Manganese plays a tole in oxidative phosphorylation, fatty acid metabolism, and synthesis of proteins, mucopolysaccharides, and cholesterol. Toxicity from inhalation produces symptoms mimicking Wilson's disease and Parkinson's disease.
Veterinary Medicine:
The potential for manganese toxicity in livestock is limited except when dietary intake of other minerals is marginal. Studies suggest fish may be more sensitive to manganese toxicity than mammals or birds.

5686-1 Mercury [Mass/mass] in Hair
Part Descriptions
LP14344-3 Mercury
Mercury is a naturally occurring metal which has several forms. The metallic mercury is a shiny, silver-white, odorless liquid. If heated, it is a colorless, odorless gas. Mercury combines with other elements, such as chlorine, sulfur, or oxygen, to form inorganic mercury compounds or "salts," which are usually white powders or crystals. Mercury also combines with carbon to make organic mercury compounds. The most common one, methylmercury, is produced mainly by microscopic organisms in the water and soil. More mercury in the environment can increase the amounts of methylmercury that these small organisms make.
Metallic mercury is used to produce chlorine gas and caustic soda, and is also used in thermometers, dental fillings, and batteries. Mercury salts are sometimes used in skin lightening creams and as antiseptic creams and ointments. [CDC: Mercury]

LP14344-3 Mercury
The nervous system is very sensitive to all forms of mercury. Methylmercury and metallic mercury vapors are more harmful than other forms, because more mercury in these forms reaches the brain. Exposure to high levels of metallic, inorganic, or organic mercury can permanently damage the brain, kidneys, and developing fetus. Effects on brain functioning may result in irritability, shyness, tremors, changes in vision or hearing, and memory problems. Short-term exposure to high levels of metallic mercury vapors may cause effects including lung damage, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, increases in blood pressure or heart rate, skin rashes, and eye irritation.[CDC: Toxfaqs]

5697-8 Molybdenum [Mass/mass] in Hair
Part Descriptions
LP16828-3 Molybdenum
Molybdenum (atomic symbol Mo) is an essential trace element, required for the enzymes xanthine oxidase, aldehyde oxidase, and nitrate reductase. It is present in very small amounts in the body. Molybdenum is thought to be involved in many important biological processes, including development of the nervous system, waste processing in the kidneys, and energy production in cells. High levels of molybdenum can interfere with the body's uptake of copper, producing copper deficiency. Molybdenum measurements can be used for assessing nutrition (as in total parenteral nutrition, TPN), molybdenum cofactor deficiency, and following patients with molybdenum-containing prostheses.
Veterinary Medicine:
Molybdenum toxicity can occur in cattle or sheep grazing on pastures with alkaline soil or soil contaminated with industrial sources of molybdenum. Molybdenosis in animals results in secondary copper deficiency and presents with a variety of symptoms, including diarrhea, anemia, anorexia, depigmentation on hair or wool, neurologic abnormalities, impaired reproduction, and premature death.(Mineral Tolerance of Animals: Second Revised Edition, 2005)

50881-2 Molybdenum [Moles/mass] in Hair

76656-8 Phosphate [Mass/mass] in Hair
Part Descriptions
LP14912-7 Phosphate
Phosphate levels are checked to see if a patient has a kidney or bone-related disease or to identify problems with certain glands, such as the parathyroid glands. Phosphate is a salt of phosphoric acid. In organic chemistry, a phosphate, or organophosphate, is an ester of phosphoric acid. The body needs phosphate to build and repair bones and teeth and to help the nervous system function. A high level of phosphate in the blood is usually caused by a kidney problem since they help control the amount of phosphate in the blood. Phosphate levels also affects the level of calcium in the blood, so both calcium and phosphate levels are usually measured at the same time. In animals, rat poison containing phosphorus has been responsible for intoxication, including secondary poisoning. Chemical tests must be used for confirmation since clinical and pathological findings are usually not sufficient.

50902-6 Potassium [Moles/mass] in Hair
Part Descriptions
LP15098-4 Potassium
Potassium (symbol K from Latin:kalium) is a key chemical element involved in neuron function and influencing osmotic balance between cells and interstitial fluid. Depletion in potassium levels results in deficient fluid and electrolyte balance in the body as well as various nervous and cardiac dysfunctions. Studies suggest diets high in potassium can reduce the risk of hypertension and possibly stroke. Foods rich in potassium include parsley, dried apricots, potatoes, bananas, avocados, soybeans, and bran, as well as most fruits, vegetables, meat and fish. Overall, clear cases of potassium deficiency are rare in healthy individuals.

5733-1 Silver [Mass/mass] in Hair
Part Descriptions
LP15141-2 Silver
Silver is a naturally-occurring substance that humans are exposed to daily through food, drinking water and air at very low levels. Workplace exposure can also occur. Silver can enter the body through the gastrointestinal tract, lungs and skin. Most of the silver that enters the body is eliminated in the stool, but some may build up in many places in the body. Argyria is a permanent condition in which long-term silver accumulation causes skin and other tissues to turn grey or blue-grey; however, it is thought to be a cosmetic condition. In rare cases, exposure to dust containing relatively high levels of silver compounds, such as in certain chemical manufacturing facilities, may cause breathing problems and lung and throat irritation. Skin contact with silver compounds may also cause mild allergic reactions, such as rash, swelling, and inflammation. [http://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/phs/phs.asp?id=537&tid=97]

50908-3 Silver [Moles/mass] in Hair

51205-3 Sodium [Mass/mass] in Hair
Part Descriptions
LP15099-2 Sodium
Sodium (Na) is a positively charged electrolyte and a mineral. Eighty-five percent of Na is located in the blood and lymph fluid. The hormone aldosterone that is secreted by the adrenal glands helps to regulate Na levels by signaling the kidneys to either retain or secrete it. Damage or disease to the kidneys can lead to dangerous fluctuations of sodium. Na plays a number of key roles in the homeostasis of the human body. It helps to maintain blood volume by osmotically pulling water into the blood vessels. Too much sodium in the blood may cause too much water to be brought into the blood vessels and lead to high blood pressure. Muscles and nerves conduct electrical impulses that require charged particles including Na. The electrical currents cause muscle cells to contract and nerve cells to relay electrical signals between them. Too little sodium can lead to muscle spasms, cramps, headache, irritability, restlessness, nausea and fatigue. Extreme hyponatremia can lead to confusion, hallucinations, decreased consciousness and coma. Conversely, hypernatremia can cause lethargy or restlessness, deep tendon reflexes, muscle spasticity and seizures.

15408-8 Thallium [Mass/mass] in Hair
Part Descriptions
LP16837-4 Thallium
Thallium is the chemical element in the periodic table that has the symbol Tl and atomic number 81. This soft gray malleable poor metal resembles tin but discolors when exposed to air. Thallium is highly toxic and is used in rat poisons and insecticides but since it might also cause cancer (although the EPA does not class it as carcinogen), this use has been cut back or eliminated in many countries. It is also used in infrared detectors. It has even been used in some murders, even earning the nickname Inheritance powder alongside Arsenic.

LP16838-2 Tin
Tin is a component of many soils and may be released in dusts from wind storms, roads, and farming activities. Gases, dusts, and fumes containing tin may be released from smelting and refining processes, burning of waste, and burning of fossil fuels (coal or oil). In small amounts tin does not cause any harmful effects, however, ingesting large amounts of inorganic tin may cause abdominal pain, anemia, and liver and kidney problems. There is no evidence that inorganic tin compounds affect reproductive functions, produce birth defects, or cause cancer.

59754-2 Titanium [Mass/mass] in Hair
Part Descriptions
LP16839-0 Titanium
Titanium is a chemical element in the periodic table that has the symbol Ti and atomic number 22. It is a light, strong, lustrous, corrosion -resistant (including resistance to sea water and chlorine) transition metal with a white-silvery-metallic color. Titanium is used in strong light-weight alloys (most notably with iron and aluminium), and in powdered form to other materials, such as graphite composites. Its most common compound, titanium dioxide, is used in white pigments. Examples in which white pigment, consisting of titanium oxide, is used, are correction fluid and commonly used white paint to repaint walls. It is also used in toothpaste, white road marking paints and in white fireworks. Substances containing titanium are called titaniferous. The element occurs in numerous minerals with the main sources being rutile and ilmenite, which are widely distributed over the Earth.

LP16839-0 Titanium
The ninth most abundant element in the earth's crust, is widely distributed and mainly used in the aircraft and chemical industries for its corrosion-resistant properties. Main sources of environmental contamination are combustion of fossil fuels and the incineration of titanium-containing wastes. Absorption from the gastrointestinal tract takes place, but the extent is unknown. Usually the highest titanium concentrations are in the lungs, followed by the kidney and liver. There is no evidence that titanium is an essential element for man or animals. Animal and human studies have shown that titanium in implants and prostheses is extremely well tolerated by osseous and soft tissues. Titanium compounds have been used in various dermatological formulations, without any known adverse effects; however, exposure appears to induce various levels of slight pulmonary fibrosis. Titanium dioxide is also often used in lung clearance studies where a biologically inert substance is needed.

50926-5 Titanium [Moles/mass] in Hair

LP18123-7 Tungsten
Tungsten, also known as wolfram, is a hard, rare metal found in rocks and minerals and in numerous applications, including incandescent light bulb filaments, X-ray tubes, welding elctrodes, and golf clubs. It is also used in the military for armor-piercing munitions. Tungsten is released to the atmosphere by various mechanisms, including windblown dusts and during ore processing, tungsten alloy (hard-metal) fabrication, tungsten carbide production and use, and municipal waste combustion. Individuals who work in manufacturing, fabricating, and reclaiming industries may be exposed to higher levels of tungsten or tungsten compounds compared to the general population. Conditions such as pulmonary fibrosis, memory and sensory deficits, and increased mortality due to lung cancer have been attributed to occupational exposure to hard metals, including tungsten.

LP16841-6 Uranium
Testing for uranium isotopes (U238, U235, U234) and depleted uranium (DU) may be performed to determine occupational exposure in the workplaces that involve uranium mining, milling, or processing. Exposure occurs primarily by inhaling dust and other small particles. Exposure to DU may also occur in military personnel from retention internal shrapnel that contains DU or exposure to dust generated from ammunition impact. Health effects from uranium exposure can result from chemical toxicity to the kidney, which can occur occasionally from high occupational exposure.

LP14795-6 Zinc
Zinc deficiency may be due to excess urine losses, especially in cirrhosis, hemolytic anemias, sickle cell disease, alcoholism, diabetes, or chronic renal diseases. Urine zinc levels are measured to evaluate therapy compliance in patients with Wilson's disease. Zinc is excreted mainly in feces, but elevated urine zinc levels may suggest excessive zinc supplementation.
Growth retardation, hypogonadism, skin changes, poor appetite, mental lethargy and delayed wound healing are some manifestations of chronic zinc deficiency. Severe deficiency may be life threatening in patients with acrodermatitis enteropathica.

76658-4 Zirconium [Mass/mass] in Hair
Part Descriptions
LP17263-2 Zirconium
Zirconium, chemical element Zr and atomic number 40, is a lustrous, grey-white, strong transition metal that resembles hafnium, and is mainly used as a refractory and opacifier, and in small amounts as an alloying agent for its strong resistance to corrosion. Materials fabricated from zirconium metal and its oxide (ZrO2) are used in space vehicle parts for their resistance to heat and in some abrasives, such as grinding wheels and sandpaper. Zirconium containing compounds are also used in many biomedical applications such as dental implants and other restorative practices, knee and hip replacements, and middle-ear ossicular chain reconstruction. Zirconium binds urea, a property that has been utilized extensively for renal dialysis patients, as a primary component of the sorbent column dependent dialysate regeneration and recirculation system. The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends a 5 mg/m3 time weighted average limit and a 10 mg/m3 short-term exposure limit for air dust. Zirconium compounds have no known biological role and are not considered an industrial health hazard. Reports of zirconium related adverse reactions are rare and there is no evidence that zirconium is carcinogenic or genotoxic. [Wikipedia: Zirconium]
