Human coronavirus 229E+OC43 RNA [Presence] in Nasopharynx by NAA with probe detection
Active
Term Description
Human coronavirus 229E is a single-stranded, positive-sense, RNA virus species in the Alphacoronavirus genus of the subfamily Coronavirinae, in the family Coronaviridae, of the order Nidovirales. Human coronavirus OC43 is an enveloped, positive-sense, single-stranded RNA virus species in the Betacoronavirus genus, of the subfamily Coronavirinae, in the family Coronaviridae, of the order Nidovirales. [Wikipedia] This assay tests for Human coronavirus 229E and OC43 RNA but does not distinguish between them.

Part Description
LP189868-5 Human coronavirus 229E+OC43
Coronaviruses, named for the crown-like spikes on their surface, are common viruses that cause mild to moderate upper-respiratory tract illnesses of a short duration. There are four main sub-groupings of coronaviruses, known as alpha, beta, gamma, and delta. The six coronaviruses that can infect humans are: alpha coronaviruses 229E and NL63, and beta coronaviruses OC43, HKU1, SARS-CoV (the coronavirus that causes severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS), and MERS-CoV (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, or MERS). Infections are common with human coronaviruses 229E, NL63, OC43, and HKU1. The exceptions are SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV. SARS-CoV (severe acute respiratory syndrome) was first recognized in China in November 2002 causing a worldwide outbreak from 2002 to 2003. Since 2004, there have no reported cases of SARS-CoV infection. MERS-CoV, first reported in Saudi Arabia in 2012, has caused illness in hundreds of people from several countries. All cases to date have been linked to countries in and near the Arabian Peninsula.

- Change Reason
- Added "RNA" to the Component. The Long Common Name and Shortname had RNA included but it was missing in the Component.; The PrThr property is used for LOINC terms whose results are reported using an ordered categorical scale, regardless of whether or not an internal threshold was used to make that determination. This change was approved by the Laboratory LOINC Committee in June 2016.
