Chromosomal translocation t(1;19)(q23.3;p13.3) PBX1/TCF3 is caused by a breakpoint in 19p13.3 and occurs in two different forms: 1) a balanced form found in one fourth of cases with a der(1) and a der(19) and 2) an unbalanced form found in 3/4 cases with 2 normal chromosomes 1, a der(19), and 1 normal chromosome 19. FISH (fluorescence in situ hybridization) is a cytogenetic technique used to detect and localize the presence or absence of specific DNA sequences on chromosomes. FISH uses fluorescent probes that bind to only those parts of the chromosome with which they show a high degree of sequence similarity. Fluorescence microscopy can be used to find out where the fluorescent probe bound to the chromosomes. FISH is often used for finding specific features in DNA for use in genetic counseling, medicine, and species identification.
