1742-6 Alanine aminotransferase [Enzymatic activity/volume] in Serum or Plasma
Part Descriptions
LP15333-5 Alanine aminotransferase
Alanine transaminase or ALT is an enzyme (EC 2.6.1.2) also called serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase (SGPT) or alanine aminotransferase (ALAT). It is found in serum and in various bodily tissues, but is most commonly associated with the liver. It catalyzes the two parts of the alanine cycle. It is commonly measured clinically as a part of a diagnostic evaluation of liver health. Significantly elevated levels of ALT often suggest the existence of other medical problems such as viral hepatitis, diabetes, congestive heart failure, bile duct problems, infectious mononucleosis, or myopathy. However, elevated levels of ALT do not automatically mean that medical problems exist. Fluctuation of ALT levels is normal over the course of the day, and ALT levels can also increase in response to strenuous physical exercise.

LP15333-5 Alanine aminotransferase
Alanine aminotransferase (ALT) is an enzyme produced primarily in the liver but are also found in the heart, skeletal muscles, pancreas and kidney cells. The main function of ALT is to convert alanine into pyruvate. ALT is released into the bloodstream when cells containing it are damaged. Increased levels of ALT in the blood provide an early indicator of liver damage. ALT is often measured with aspartate aminotransferase (AST) as part of a liver panel. High levels of ALT could indicate hepatitis, obstructed bile ducts, liver tumors, cirrhosis, alcoholism or other liver disorders. [Lab Tests Online:alt/tab/sample]

1920-8 Aspartate aminotransferase [Enzymatic activity/volume] in Serum or Plasma
Part Descriptions
LP15426-7 Aspartate aminotransferase
Aspartate aminotransferase (AST) is an enzyme that is released by injured muscle cells and liver cell and is predominately found in the liver and heart. AST levels in the blood are most often used to monitor liver damage. AST is typically tested in conjunction with alanine aminotransferase (ALT) when a liver panel is ordered. High levels of AST in the bloodstream could indicate hepatitis, drug damage to the liver, cirrhosis, alcoholism, or other liver disorders. [Lab Tests Online:ast/tab/test]

2324-2 Gamma glutamyl transferase [Enzymatic activity/volume] in Serum or Plasma
Part Descriptions
LP15590-0 Gamma glutamyl transferase
Gamma glutamyl transferase (GGT or GGTP, or Gamma-GT) is a liver enzyme. It is involved in the transfer of amino acids across the cellular membrane and in glutathione metabolism. GGT is found in high concentrations in the liver, bile ducts and kidney. The enzyme is also present in other tissues, such as the epididymis. Its level in the blood may be tested because if it is elevated this may indicate an abnormality in the liver, though this can be caused by a number of conditions including: congestive heart failure, cholestasis (congestion of the bile ducts), cirrhosis of the liver, necrosis of the liver. Levels of GGT are also increased in chronic and acute alcohol abuse.

3091-6 Urea [Mass/volume] in Serum or Plasma
Part Descriptions
LP14288-2 Urea
A compound formed in the liver from ammonia produced by the deamination of amino acids. It is the principal end product of protein catabolism and constitutes about one half of the total urinary solids.
Source: National Library of Medicine, MeSH 2006
LP14288-2 Urea
Urea, also called carbamide, is an organic chemical compound involved in the metabolism of nitrogen-containing compounds and in the re-absorption of water and critical ions from excreted urine, an important mechanism in prevention of water loss and maintaining blood pressure. Urea levels are measured to diagnose conditions that affect the kidneys, such as acute kidney failure or end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and the urine urea nitrogen (UUN) tests may be used to determine how well a patient's kidneys are functioning. Increased or decreased levels of urea may also suggest dehydration or increased protein intake.

26515-7 Platelets [#/volume] in Blood
Part Descriptions
LP14597-6 Platelets
Platelets are miniature fragments of cytoplasm that break off of megakaryocytes. Their primary function is to inhibit excessive hemorrhage after blood vessel injury. Platelets cling to the damaged part of the blood vessel where they become activated, recruit other platelets to the site, and begin the cascade of physical and chemical events that lead to clot formation. Activated platelets secrete cytokines, chemokines, and growth factors, all which play a role in thrombus development. When activated, platelets stimulate monocytes and neutrophils to leave the blood vessel and enter the tissue. PMID: 27226790 The normal range of platelets is 150,000 to 450,000 platelets/uL. Lower than normal platelet counts can lead to increased bleeding and is caused by a number of factors including: chemotherapy, autoimmune disorders and some medications. Increased platelets can cause hypercoagulation due to cancer, anemia, spleen removal and some medications.[MedlinePlus Encyclopedia:003647]

In LOINC, sex refers to the biological sex of an organism, which is most commonly determined based on anatomy and physiology or genetic (chromosome) analysis. Our definition is based on the World Health Organization's definition of sex and gender: sex (male, female) refers to biological and physiological characteristics, and gender (masculine, feminine) refers to socially constructed roles, behaviors, activities, and attributes. 77616-1 Liver fibrosis score in Serum or Plasma Calculated by FibroMeter
Term Description
This term was created for, but is not limited in use to, the FibroMeter Virus package of tests, which is intended as a surrogate marker of liver fibrosis, cirrhosis and necro-inflammatory activity in patients with chronic hepatitis C with or without co-infection with HIV and in active carriers of hepatitis B virus. The fibrosis score ranges from 0 to 1 and is calculated using a proprietary algorithm based on seven lab tests (AST, ALT, GGT, prothrombin index, platelet count, urea, and alpha-2-macroglobulin) plus the patient's age and gender.

Part Descriptions
LP193274-0 Liver fibrosis score
A liver fibrosis score is a noninvasive method used to determine the presence and degree of liver fibrosis in a patient based on a variety of different parameters (e.g., lab tests, age, and gender) depending on the method used. PMID: 21254180. Different methods used to calculate a patient's liver fibrosis score include the Enhanced Liver Fibrosis (ELF) test, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) fibrosis score, HepaScore, FibroMeter, and FibroSURE.
