Part Descriptions
LP207320-5 Campylobacter coli+jejuni+lari 16S
Campylobacter (meaning 'twisted bacteria') is a genus of bacteria that are Gram-negative, spiral, and microaerophilic. Motile, with either uni- or bi-polar flagella, the organisms have a characteristic spiral/corkscrew appearance and are oxidase-positive. Campylobacter jejuni is now recognized as one of the main causes of bacterial foodborne disease in many developed countries. At least a dozen species of Campylobacter have been implicated in human disease, with C. jejuni and C. coli the most common. C. fetus causes spontaneous abortions in cattle and sheep, and is an opportunistic pathogen in humans.

LP99310-2 Campylobacter
Campylobacter species is a gram-negative comma or S-shaped motile bacteria. Most infections occur from eating raw or undercooked poultry or by touching a contaminated object. Other sources of Campylobacter include water, animals, and unpasteurized milk. Symptoms begin 2-5 days after being exposed and include bloody diarrhea, fever, abdominal cramps, nausea, and vomiting. Some people are asymptomatic. Campylobacter can spread to the bloodstream and cause life-threatening illness in immunocompromised patients. C jejuni is the primary species found in campylobacter infections. Campylobacter is identified in stool, body tissue, and fluid cultures.[https://www.cdc.gov/campylobacter/faq.html]

Campylobacter bacteria are a major cause of foodborne diarrheal illness in humans and are the most common bacteria that cause gastroenteritis worldwide. In developed and developing countries, they cause more cases of diarrhea than foodborne Salmonella. Campylobacter are mainly spiral-shaped, S-shaped or curved, rod-shaped bacteria. Currently, there are 17 species and 6 subspecies assigned to the genus Campylobacter, of which the most frequently reported in human diseases are C. jejuni (subspecies jejuni) and C. coli.

80676-0 Escherichia coli O157 rfbE gene [Presence] in Stool by NAA with probe detection
Term Description
Qualitative detection of targeted nucleic acid sequences in the Escherichia coli O157 rfbE gene in stool specimens by real-time PCR-based methods. This term was created for, but not limited in use to, the submitter's test kit, xTAG® Gastrointestinal Pathogen Panel (GPP).
Part Descriptions
LP207314-8 Escherichia coli O157 rfbE gene
The rfbE gene in Escherichia coli (E coli) O157 encodes perosamine synthase and is the first O157 Shiga toxin-producing E coli (STEC) rfb locus to be cloned and sequenced. PMID: 8890241 The rfbE gene is used in PCR assays to distinguish serotype O157 from non-O157 STEC in a clinical specimens. PMID: 16480968 Although rfbE is specific for serotype O157, it does not distinguish between O157:H7 and O157:non-H7 strains. E. coli O157:H7 (enterohemorrhagic E. coli or EHEC) is a well-known food-borne pathogen. E. coli O157:non-H7 strains are not classified as EHEC and their clinical significance is less clear. Such non-H7 strains have been isolated from asymptomatic patients, patients with diarrhea, as well as food and environmental sources. PMID: 21876740

79386-9 Escherichia coli Stx1 toxin stx1 gene [Presence] in Stool by NAA with probe detection
Term Description
This term was created for, but is not limited in use to, Nanosphere's Verigene Enteric Pathogens Nucleic Acid Test, which is intended for the detection and identification of common pathogenic enteric bacteria, viruses, and genetic virulence markers in stool specimens from individuals with signs and symptoms of gastrointestinal infection.
Part Descriptions
LP262487-4 Escherichia coli Stx1 toxin stx1 gene
The Stx1 toxin A subunit is encoded by the stx1 gene [www.uniprot.org/uniprot/ ?query=stx1+escherichia+coli&sort=score] and the Stx2 toxin A subunit is encoded by the stx2 gene.[UniProt: K0JD26] Stx1a and Stx2a are produced by some serogroups of Escherichia coli (also known as Vero toxins and previously referred to as Shiga-like toxins) are two cytotoxins that cause hemorrhagic colitis (HC) and hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). The two toxins produce similar symptoms, but are immunologically unique. Both toxins are composed of a single copy of subunit A and five copies of subunit B. Stx1a and Stx1b induce host cell apoptosis by removing an adenine residue from the 28S rRNA of the 60S ribosome, with RNA-N-glycosidase activity provided by subunit A. The five B subunits bind to the host cell receptor present on endothelial cells. PMID: 25530917 Shigella toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) has become a serious food-borne pathogen. Outbreaks of STEC have been associated with the consumption of pork products resulting in HC and HUS. STEC in swine has been demonstrated to cause edema disease. Epidemiological studies throughout the world have proven that STEC can be harbored and shed by domestic swine. PMID: 24397985

Part Descriptions
LP208368-3 Escherichia coli Stx1 & Stx2 toxin stx1 & stx2 genes
Shiga-like toxin is generated by some strains of Escherichia coli, known as Stx-producing E. coli (STEC). Shiga-like toxins are named for their similarity to the AB5-type shiga toxin produced by the bacteria Shigella dysenteriae. There are two primary types, known as Stx1 (also Stx1a or SLT1) and Stx2 (also Stx2a or SLT2). Variants of Stx1 and Stx2 have been identified but they are rarely found in clinical specimens and few are clinically significant. PMID: 25530917 Shiga-like toxins are associated with hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS) in which patients present with thrombocytopenia, hemolytic anemia, and kidney failure. PMID: 6131302

97320-6 Escherichia coli O157 DNA [Presence] in Stool by NAA with probe detection
Part Descriptions
LP36684-6 Escherichia coli O157
Escherichia coli O157 is an enterohemorrhagic strain of the bacterium Escherichia coli and an emerging cause of foodborne illness. An estimated 73,000 cases of infection and 61 deaths occur each year in the United States alone, although it is rarer in less industrialized countries. Infection often leads to bloody diarrhea, and occasionally to kidney failure. Most illness has been associated with eating undercooked, contaminated ground beef, although it is also transmitted by person-to-person contact, produce, drinking unpasteurized milk or swimming in or drinking contaminated water. The 2006 United States E. coli outbreak was linked to a large quantity of spinach contaminated with this strain.

LP36684-6 Escherichia coli O157
A verocytotoxin-producing serogroup belonging to the O subfamily of Escherichia coli which has been shown to cause severe food-borne disease. Recently, a strain from this serogroup, serotype H7 which produces Shiga-like toxins, has been linked to human disease outbreaks resulting from contamination of foods from bovine origin. This serogroup causes hemorrhagic and HEMOLYTIC-UREMIC SYNDROME and predominantly hemorrhagic diarrhea and GASTROENTERITIS in children.

70296-9 Plesiomonas shigelloides DNA [Presence] in Stool by NAA with probe detection
Term Description
This term was created for a RT-PCR test that identifies the 23S ribosomal subunit of Plesiomonas shigelloides DNA using fluorescent probes. Results (positive/negative) are based on the cross threshold (Ct) value of the amplified DNA.
Part Descriptions
LP146108-8 Plesiomonas shigelloides
Plesiomonas shigelloides is a Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacterium which has been isolated from freshwater, freshwater fish, shellfish, and from many types of animals. Human exposure to P. shigelloides is likely through contaminated water which has been used for drinking, recreation, or to rinse foods that are eaten without cooking. Not all cases of ingested P. shigelloides result in illness, and the dose needed for clinical symptoms is presumed to be at least a million organisms. Symptomatic disease is usually self-limiting, and is characterized by fever, chills, abdominal pain, nausea, watery diarrhea, and vomiting. Symptoms typically begin 20-24 hours after consumption of contaminated food or water and can last from one day to one week. 97313-1 Salmonella sp DNA [Presence] in Stool by NAA with probe detection
Part Descriptions
LP16750-9 Salmonella sp
Salmonella are gram-negative, flagellated, facultative intracellular, anaerobic bacilli with O, H and Vi surface antigens. Once ingested, Salmonella survives the gastric acid barrier and penetrates the epithelial cells of the small and large intestines. The invasion of the epithelial cells stimulates the release of cytokines and a subsequent inflammatory response leading to diarrhea and possible ulceration of the mucosa.[NCBI Books: 8435] Antibodies to Salmonella are the body's defense when the bacteria is outside of its host cell which occurs at the initial infection and when the bacillus moves from cell to cell. There is a 10 minute window of opportunity when the Salmonella bacillus leaves the macrophage to invade another. During that time, antibodies and complement work to eradicate the bacilli, but some of the extracellular bacilli will evade attack and enter another host cell. Studies have shown that vaccines play an important role in the fight against typhoid fever. PMID: 25566248 There are two species of Salmonella: S. enterica and S. bongori. These species can be further subclassified into subspecies and serovars.
Veterinary Medicine:
Salmonella infection is most often caused by the serovars Salmonella choleraesuis, and Salmonella typhimurium and less often by Salmonella derby. Infected pigs can be asymptomatic and become carriers of S. choleraesius. Typically, the bacteria survive in the mesenteric lymph nodes that drain into the intestines, and are not shed in the feces unless the pig is under stress. The carrier state lasts for weeks to months and is self-limiting. Severe infection with S. choleraesius can be serious starting out as septicemia and progressing to pneumonia and enteritis. The infection can spread to various tissues including to the central nervous system leading to meningitis and to the joints where it manifests as arthritis. Severe infections with S. choleraesius occurs at any age, but most often in pigs 12-14 weeks of age.[http://www.thepigsite.com/pighealth/article/357/salmonellosis/]

81657-9 Salmonella sp spaO gene [Presence] in Stool by NAA with probe detection
Term Description
This test targets the Salmonella sp SpaO gene. The SpaO gene is involved in a secretory pathway responsible for the surface presentation of determinants needed for the entry of Salmonella sp into mammalian cells.[http://www.uniprot.org/uniprot/P40699] This term was created for, but is not limited in use to, the submitter's BD MAX Enteric Bacterial test kit, that is a diagnostic test for the direct qualitative detection of enteric bacterial pathogens.
Part Descriptions
LP208637-1 Salmonella sp spaO gene
Salmonella is a rod-shaped, motile bacterium, nonmotile (exceptions S. gallinarum and S. pullorum), nonsporeforming and Gram-negative. There is a widespread occurrence in animals, especially in poultry and swine. Environmental sources of the organism include water, soil, insects, factory surfaces, kitchen surfaces, animal feces, raw meats, raw poultry, and raw seafoods, to name only a few. S. typhi and the paratyphoid bacteria are normally caused septicemic and produce typhoid or typhoid-like fever in humans. Other forms of salmonellosis generally produce milder symptoms.

70242-3 Shigella species+EIEC invasion plasmid antigen H ipaH gene [Presence] in Stool by NAA with probe detection
Part Descriptions
LP145956-1 Shigella species+EIEC invasion plasmid antigen H (ipaH) gene
The invasion plasmid antigen H (ipaH) gene is a multicopy gene exclusively found in all Shigella and enteroinvasive E. coli (EIEC). Shigella and EIEC both evolved from nonpathogenic Escherichia coli, and sequencing of multiple housekeeping genes indicates that EIEC is genetically related to Shigella. Shigella causes bacillary dysentery with symptoms including abdominal cramps, nausea, fever and a bloody and mucus diarrhea. By testing for the absence of lysine decarboxylase (LDC) activity and presence of the IpaH gene, Shigella and EIEC can be differentiated from non-enteroinvasive E. coli. PMID: 21901636

Source: National Library of Medicine, MeSH 2006
LP17258-2 Yersinia enterocolitica
Yersinia enterocolitica is a species of gram-negative coccobacillus-shaped bacterium, belonging to the family Enterobacteriaceae. Primarily a zoonotic disease (cattle, deer, pigs, and birds), animals which recover frequently become asymptomatic carriers of the disease.
Yersinia enterocolitica is a heterogeneous group of strains, classified into 6 biogroups, and into more than 57 O serogroups. The human pathogenic strains most frequently isolated worldwide belong to serogroups O:3, O:5,27, O:8 and O:9. The major route of Y. enterocolitica infection is through contaminated foods or causing gastrointestinal infections which are usually self-limiting. PMID: 22019131

97321-4 Cyclospora cayetanensis DNA [Presence] in Stool by NAA with probe detection
Part Descriptions
LP14898-8 Cyclospora cayetanensis
Cyclospora cayetanensis is a protozoan that causes disease in humans, and perhaps other primates. It has been linked in the United States from fecally-contaminated imported raspberries and was virtually unknown before about 1990, but has been on the rise since. The health risk associated with the disease is usually confined to adult foreigners visiting endemic regions and acquiring the infection: this is why C. cayetanensis has been labeled as causing "traveler's diarrhea."
This species was placed in the Cyclospora genus because of the spherical shape of its sporocysts

92692-3 Norovirus genogroup I+II RNA [Presence] in Stool by NAA with probe detection
Part Descriptions
LP204849-6 Norovirus genogroup I+II
Norovirus (NV) is a non-enveloped, single-stranded RNA virus that belongs to the Caliciviridae family. It was previously known as the 'Norwalk-like virus'. Of the six known genogroups of NV, only three are known to infect humans and include GI, GII, and GIV. Within these three genogroups 25 genotypes have been discovered, which is why people can be infected multiple times throughout their lives. Infection with NV causes inflammation of the stomach and intestines which leads to non-bloody diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, stomach pain, fever, headache, and body aches. Symptoms persist for 1-3 days, but NV can be found in stool samples of infected people for up to two weeks after symptoms subside. The virus is highly contagious and is transmitted by the fecal-oral route, by contact with infected people, and by contact with contaminated surfaces or substances. NV is the primary cause of food-related illness in the United States. The most common genotype of NV that is responsible for outbreaks since 2002 is GII.4. NV spreads quickly in closed spaces such as daycare centers, nursing homes, schools, and cruise ships. Diagnostic tests for NV include those that detect the viral RNA or a viral antigen in stool.[https://www.cdc.gov/norovirus/preventing-infection.html]

92693-1 Rotavirus A RNA [Presence] in Stool by NAA with probe detection
Part Descriptions
LP204843-9 Rotavirus A
Rotaviruses are non-enveloped, multilayered, icosahedral viruses composed of an outer layer, an inner layer, and a core. After the immature, double-layered virus is assembled in the host cell cytoplasm, they bud across the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and acquire a temporary membrane that has on its surface the ER resident viral glycoproteins NSP4, VP4 and VP7. The virus loses its temporary membrane and the NSP4 glycoprotein as it moves toward the center of the ER cisternae. The VP4 and VP7 proteins are pushed to the outermost membrane layer and become the mature triple-layered rotavirus. The outer capsid glycoprotein VP7 is believed to be important for the attachment to and entry in the host cell. After it enters the host cell, the VP7 glycoprotein is lost. [UniProt: Q89865] When the host cell lyses, the mature virus are released. There are eight groups of rotavirus, A through H. Groups A, B, C, and H are associated with an acute gastroenteritis and are found in humans and animals. Groups D, E, F, and G are found only in animals. Rotavirus A (RVA) are the cause an acute gastroenteritis in children and animals. RVA is the most common infectious organism to cause severe gastroenteritis in children less than 3 years of age. It is estimated that 95% of children worldwide between the ages of 3 and 5 will become infected with RVA. Approximately 8000 children under 5 years of age in Latin America and the Caribbean die of acute enteritis caused by RVA.
