Leishmania infantum+donovani IgM Ab [Titer] in Serum or Plasma by Immunofluorescence
Active
Term Description
This assay detects antibodies against Leishmania donovani IgM for L. infantum screening based on the known cross reactivity between L. donovani and L. infantum. If the Leishmania IIFT is positive, a monospecific test (example Westernblot) can be performed to differentiate the pathogenic agents and confirm the diagnosis. Immunoglobulin specific slides distinguish between IgG, IgM and IgA. No reaction at a 1:100 titer indicates no IgM class antibodies against Leishmania donovani are detected, but infection cannot be excluded. A reaction of a titer at 1:100 is positive indicating a former or acute infection. This term was created for, but not limited in use to, the submitter's Euroimmun Anti-Leishmania donovani indirect immunofluorescence test kit.

LP201795-4 Leishmania infantum+donovani
Leishmaniasis is a vector-borne disease transmitted by sandflies and caused by intracellular protozoa of the genus Leishmania. Human infection is caused by about 21 of 30 species that infect mammals, including the L. donovani complex with 3 species (L. donovani, L. infantum, and L. chagasi); the L. mexicana complex with 3 main species (L. mexicana, L. amazonensis, and L. venezuelensis); L. tropica; L. major; L. aethiopica; and the subgenus Viannia with 4 main species (L. (V.) braziliensis, L. (V.) guyanensis, L. (V.) panamensis, and L. (V.) peruviana). The different species are morphologically indistinguishable, but they can be distinguished by isoenzyme analysis, molecular methods, or monoclonal antibodies. Leishmaniasis is found in about 88 countries, most in the tropics and subtropics. More than 90 percent of the world's cases of visceral leishmaniasis are in India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sudan, and Brazil. Leishmaniasis is also found in Mexico, Central America, and South America, from northern Argentina to Texas (not in Uruguay, Chile, or Canada), southern Europe, Asia (not Southeast Asia), the Middle East, and Africa. Human Leishmaniasis comprises multiple clinical syndromes; visceral, cutaneous, and mucosal forms. Infections can result in two main forms of disease, cutaneous leishmaniasis and visceral leishmaniasis (kala-azar). Different species can be associated with diverse clinical manifestations and sequelae. Species identification can facilitate clinical management. Cutaneous leishmaniasis is characterized by cutaneous lesions. Visceral leishmaniasis presents with fever, weight loss, and an enlarged spleen and liver. Visceral leishmaniasis is becoming an important opportunistic infection in regions where it coexists with HIV.
