Herpes simplex virus 1 and 2 DNA panel - Anogenital specimen by Probe and target amplification method
Active
80353-6 Herpes simplex virus 1 genome DNA polymerase region B+thymidine kinase region C [Presence] in Anogenital specimen by NAA with probe detection
Term Description
This assay detects herpes simplex virus (HSV) 1 using two different probes, one for genome DNA polymerase region B and one for thymidine kinase region C. If either of the probes produces a sufficient signal the result is considered positive. This term was created for, but is not limited in use to, the Roche cobas® HSV 1 and 2 Test, which is intended for use as an aid in diagnosis of anogenital HSV-1 and HSV-2 infections in symptomatic patients. The cobas HSV 1 and 2 Test is not FDA cleared for use with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and is not intended to be used for prenatal screening or for individuals under the age of 18 years.

Part Descriptions
LP200490-3 Herpes simplex virus 1 genome DNA polymerase region B+thymidine kinase region C
Herpes simplex virus 1 and 2 (HSV-1 and HSV-2) are two species of the herpes virus family, Herpesviridae, which cause infections in humans. Eight members of herpes virus family infect humans and cause a variety of illnesses including cold sores, chickenpox or varicella, shingles or herpes zoster (VZV), cytomegalovirus (CMV). Some herpes viruses have been implicated in certain cancers and in the inflammation of the brain (encephalitis). All viruses in the herpes family produce life-long infections.
They are also called Human Herpes Virus 1 and 2 (HHV-1 and HHV-2) and are neurotropic and neuroinvasive viruses; they enter and hide in the human nervous system, accounting for their durability in the human body. HSV-1 is commonly associated with herpes outbreaks of the face known as cold sores or fever blisters, whereas HSV-2 is more often associated with genital herpes.

- The PrThr property is used for LOINC terms whose results are reported using an ordered categorical scale, regardless of whether or not an internal threshold was used to make that determination. This change was approved by the Laboratory LOINC Committee in June 2016.
