Part Descriptions
LP72219-6 Vital capacity
Vital capacity (VC) is the largest volume a patient can exhale after a full inhalation, and forced vital capacity (FVC) is the largest volume a patient can exhale with maximum effort after a full inhalation. In people without lung disease, VC and FVC are essentially the same. However, in patients with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), FVC may be less than VC due to airway resistance, small airway collapse and gas trapping. The difference between VC and FVC is associated with degree of airflow limitation as well as exercise tolerance in patients with COPD. PMID: 24507622

Part Descriptions
LP72216-2 Capacity.functional residual
Total lung capacity (TLC) is the volume of air in the lungs at maximum inflation. TLC can be derived as the sum of the vital capacity (VC), the largest volume a patient can exhale after a full inhalation, and residual volume (RV), the volume of air remaining in the lungs after maximum exhalation). Functional residual capacity (FRC) is the volume of air remaining in the lungs after normal exhalation. Restrictive lung diseases, such as pulmonary fibrosis and neonatal respiratory distress syndrome, generally lead to a decrease in various lung volumes, while obstructive lung diseases, such as asthma, are associated with preserved total volumes. However, obstructive disease may be associated with high RV values, which may also be expressed as RV/TLC, which represents RV as a percentage of TLC.

Maximum inspiratory pressure (MIP) is the maximum pressure that can be generated against an occluded airway beginning at functional residual capacity (FRC) and reflects the strength and function of inspiratory muscles. Maximum expiratory pressure (MEP) reflects the strength and function of expiratory muscles. MIP and MEP can be used to diagnose, assess the severity, and monitor treatment of respiratory muscle weakness.

Part Descriptions
LP208611-6 Inspiratory pressure.max
Maximum inspiratory pressure (MIP) is the maximum pressure that can be generated against an occluded airway beginning at functional residual capacity (FRC) and reflects the strength and function of inspiratory muscles. Maximum expiratory pressure (MEP) reflects the strength and function of expiratory muscles. MIP and MEP can be used to diagnose, assess the severity, and monitor treatment of respiratory muscle weakness.

81459-0 Spirometry panel
Part Descriptions
LP212457-8 Spirometry panel
Spirometry is the most commonly used pulmonary function test (PFT). It is widely available in clinician's offices and emergency rooms and is used for screening as well as monitoring patients with various pulmonary diseases, including asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Common measurements include forced vital capacity (FVC) and forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1). The FEV1 varies inversely and linearly with the degree of airflow obstruction in patients with asthma and COPD. Reversibility of obstruction, which is suggestive of asthma, is assessed by repeating spirometry measurements after administration of a bronchodilator. PMID: 8298772

19866-3 Vital capacity [Volume] Respiratory system by Spirometry
