LP15807-8 Phytanate
Phytanic acid (or 3,7,11,15-tetramethyl hexadecanoic acid) is present in human diet or in animal tissues where it may be derived from chlorophyll in plant extracts. Phytanic acid derives from the corresponding alcohol, phytol , and is oxidized into pristanic acid. It can also characterize a precise human pathology, Refsum's syndrome. This inherited neurological disorder is characterized by an accumulation of a normal metabolite of phytol (phytanic acid) in blood and tissues, and the disorder was later found to be related to deficiency in the oxidation pathway in the liver. Freshwater sponges contain terpenoid acids such as 4,8,12-trimethyltridecanoic, phytanic and pristanic acids, which indicates that these acids may have chemotaxonomical significance for both marine and freshwater sponges. Phytanic acid accumaltes in the fat of ruminant animals. Most animals lack the necessary enzyme to cleave phytol from chlorophyll.

22761-1 Pristanate (C15:0(CH3)4) [Moles/volume] in Serum or Plasma
Part Descriptions
LP18151-8 Pristanate
Pristanic acid (2,6,10,14-tetramethylpentadecanoic acid) is a terpenoid acid present at micromolar concentrations in the blood plasma of healthy individuals. It is usually present in combination with phytanic acid. In humans, pristanic acid is obtained from two sources: either directly from the diet or as the alpha oxidation product of phytanic acid. At physiological concentrations pristanic acid is a natural ligand for PPARα. In liver, pristanic acid is degraded by peroxisomal beta oxidation to propionyl-CoA. Together with phytanic acid, pristanic acid accumulates in several inherited disorders such as Zellweger syndrome.
