Part Descriptions
LP28643-2 Carcinoembryonic Ag
Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), a tumor-associated oncofetal antigen, is a member of the immunoglobulin gene super family. CEA results differ depending on the techniques used and are not always comparable. Increased CEA values are seen with cancer of the colon, rectum, lung, breast, liver, pancreas, stomach, and ovary. Pre-operative CEA values correlate with prognosis and metastasis development in patients with colorectal cancer. Serial measurements have 80% sensitivity and 70% specificity for detecting recurrence. Smaller increases in CEA may occur with benign liver disease, benign breast disease, pulmonary infection, emphysema, and renal failure. LP28643-2 Carcinoembryonic Ag
Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) is a protein normally found in the tissue of a developing fetus. The blood level of CEA drops significantly or disappears after birth. In adults, an abnormal level of CEA may indicate cancer, and smoking may increase CEA. The CEA blood test measures the level of CEA in blood to monitor responses to treatment and check for the return of colon, medullary thyroid, rectum, lung, breast, liver, pancreas, stomach, and ovarian cancer.
