Dry body weight is the body weight of a hemodialysis patient post-dialysis, when the blood pressure is within normal limits without the use of antihypertensive medication. In patients with renal failure, decline in kidney function leads to increased total body sodium, which causes an increase in extracellular fluid volume (ECV) and hypertension. During dialysis, excess sodium and fluid is removed, with a consequent decrease in blood pressure. Recommended values for blood pressure are pre-dialysis pressure of <140/90 and post-dialysis pressure of <130/85, which indicate adequate volume control. Dry body weight can help monitor ECV but is difficult to determine since it is not a constant value and may vary between hemodialysis sessions. Other methods for measuring ECV include central venous pressure, examination of the external jugular vein, assessment of edema, and the cardiothoracic index. PMID: 25028642 Source: Regenstrief LOINC
