32822-9 Epithelial cells.squamous/cells in Bronchial specimen by Light microscopy
Part Descriptions
LP70260-2 Epithelial cells.squamous
Epithelial cells cover the inside and outside of almost all of the body's surfaces. Squamous epithelial cells are flattened and barely visible by light microscopy. They fit closely together in tissues; providing a smooth, low-friction surface over which fluids can move easily. Squamous epithelia are found lining surfaces such as the alveolar epithelium in the lungs. Specialized squamous epithelia also form the lining of cavities such as the blood vessels (endothelium) and pericardium (mesothelium) and the major cavities found within the body.

30401-4 Leukocytes [#/volume] in Bronchial specimen
Part Descriptions
LP14419-3 Leukocytes
Leukocytes or white blood cells (WBCs) are immune cells that fight infection, neoplasms and other inflammatory conditions, and mediate allergic responses. There are five types of WBCs normally present in the circulation that are all derived from a similar stem cell in the bone marrow. The five type of WBCs are divided into two groups based on the presence or absence of granules in the cytoplasm. The granulocytes include the neutrophils, basophils and eosinophils. The non-granulocytes include the lymphocytes and the monocytes. The neutrophils fight infection by ingesting and digesting bacteria. Eosinophils and basophils respond to allergic reactions and are capable of ingesting antigen-antibody complexes. Monocytes phagocytose bacteria and release interferon to stimulate the immune system. Lymphocytes are divided into T-cells and B-cells. T-cell immunity is cellular and involves the activation of phagocytes and B-cell immunity uses antibodies to fight infection. Both elevated and low leukocyte counts can be markers of infection and malignancy, and low leukocyte counts are associated with a variety of primary and secondary immunodeficiencies, depending on the WBC type(s) that are out of range. Part Descriptions
LP14540-6 Lymphocytes
White blood cells formed in lymphoid tissue. The nucleus is round or ovoid with coarse, irregularly clumped chromatin whereas the cytoplasm is typically pale blue with azurophilic (if any) granules. Most lymphocytes can be classified as either T cells (transit through the thymus), B cells or natural killer cells (NK).
Source: National Library of Medicine, MeSH 2006
LP14540-6 Lymphocytes
A lymphocyte is a type of white blood cell in the vertebrate immune system.
A lymphocyte count is usually part of a peripheral complete blood cell count and is expressed as percentage of lymphocytes to total white blood cells counted. A general increase in the number of lymphocytes is known as lymphocytosis whereas a decrease is lymphocytopenia.
An increase in lymphocyte concentration is usually a sign of a viral infection (in some rare case, leukemias are found through an abnormally raised lymphocyte count in an otherwise normal person).
A low normal to low absolute lymphocyte concentration is associated with increased rates of infection after surgery or trauma.

Part Descriptions
LP14314-6 Macrophages
Macrophages (Greek:big eaters, makros = large, phagein = eat) are cells that derive from blood monocytes. Monocytes and macrophages are phagocytes, acting in both nonspecific defense (or innate immunity) as well as specific defense (or cell-mediated immunity). Their role is to phagocytize (engulf and then digest) cellular debris and pathogens, and to stimulate lymphocytes and other immune cells to respond to a foreign antigen.

27930-7 Neutrophils/Leukocytes in Bronchial specimen
Part Descriptions
LP14267-6 Neutrophils
Neutrophils are the most common form of white blood cells in healthy adults. Neutrophils are approximately 13 micrometers in diameter and have segmented nuclei with 3-5 lobes that are connected by thin strands of chromatin. (Practical Haematology; Barbara J. Bain, Imelda Bates, Mike A. Laffan,S. Mitchell Lewis; Eleventh edition; 2012) Neutrophils function to fight infection by both engulfing microorganisms and secreting lethal enzymes.
(https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMHT0022058/) They are produced in the bone marrow and their primary function is to fight infection. Neutrophil numbers increase in the blood in response to acute bacterial infection, inflammation, necrosis or chronic myelogenous leukemia. Neutrophil levels are decreased in the following conditions: aplastic anemia, autoimmune disorder, cancer, chemotherapy, myelodysplastic syndrome and during a negative reaction to drugs. 55320-6 Yeast [Presence] in Bronchial specimen by KOH preparation
Term Description
A KOH Preparation involves treating a specimen with KOH, a strong base that can make fungi and yeast more visible by partial dissolution of tissue cells, keratin, and other material. Fungal cells are resistant due to the high content of cellular chitin. KOH prep is generally a test for fungi, most often candida yeast, but others too, such as tinea capitis and other skin or nail fungal infections, even blastomycosis, etc. However, the KOH prep is also used to diagnose infections with mites (Demodex folliculorum in rosacea-like lesions and Sarcoptes scabiei in hyperkeratotic or crusted scabies) and sometimes even nematodes (in blue neck syndrome). PMID: 16766846
Part Descriptions
LP29134-1 Yeast
Fungi are eukaryotic microorganisms which manifest as yeasts, molds or a combination. Yeasts start as individual cells that reproduce by budding. Molds, which are long filaments or hyphae, grow by apical extension. Both yeasts and molds are heterotrophic and digest their food externally by absorptive nutrition. Taxonomically, yeast are characterized by their size and shape, the presence or absence of capsules, conidiogenesis (the process of daughter cell formation), presence of sexual spores, the formation of pseudo-and true hyphae and physiologic data. Species are differentiated based on the ability to assimilate and ferment carbon sources, and to utilize nitrate as nitrogen. Some opportunistic fungal pathogens found in humans are dimorphic. They grow as mycelium in nature and reproduce as yeast in the body. One example is Candida which can quickly transform from yeast to the hyphal phase in humans; this process helps it invade host tissue. [NCBI Books:NBK8125]

- The PrThr property is used for LOINC terms whose results are reported using an ordered categorical scale, regardless of whether or not an internal threshold was used to make that determination. This change was approved by the Laboratory LOINC Committee in June 2016.

32810-4 Bacteria identified in Bronchial specimen
Part Descriptions
LP14082-9 Bacteria
One of the three domains of life (the others being Eukarya and Archaea), also called Eubacteria. They are unicellular prokaryotic microorganisms which generally possess rigid cell walls and multiply by cell division. They exhibit three principal forms: round or coccal, rodlike or bacillary, and spiral or spirochetal. Bacteria can be classified by their response to oxygen (aerobic, anaerobic, or facultatively anaerobic) and by how they obtain their energy (chemotrophic, i.e. via a chemical reaction or phototrophic, via a light reaction). In addition, chemotrophs obtain their energy from chemicals, lithotrophic from inorganic compounds and organotrophic from organic compounds. Bacteria are also classified by the source carbon that they utilize: heterotrophic, from organic sources or autotrophic, from carbon dioxide. They can also be classified by whether or not they stain (based on the structure of their cell walls) with crystal violet dye: gram-negative or gram-positive.
