88170-6 Microscopic observation [Identifier] in Cornea or Conjunctiva by Gram stain
Part Descriptions
LP264599-4 Cornea/Conjunctiva
The "Cornea/Conjunctiva" System in LOINC encompasses both the cornea and conjunctiva, which are contiguous structures in front of the eye. This System is used for LOINC terms that represent tests run on either corneal or conjunctival specimens (e.g., swabs) and does not imply that both the corneal and conjunctiva were sampled in any given instance.

88142-5 Bacteria identified in Cornea or Conjunctiva by Aerobe culture
Part Descriptions
LP14082-9 Bacteria
One of the three domains of life (the others being Eukarya and Archaea), also called Eubacteria. They are unicellular prokaryotic microorganisms which generally possess rigid cell walls and multiply by cell division. They exhibit three principal forms: round or coccal, rodlike or bacillary, and spiral or spirochetal. Bacteria can be classified by their response to oxygen (aerobic, anaerobic, or facultatively anaerobic) and by how they obtain their energy (chemotrophic, i.e. via a chemical reaction or phototrophic, via a light reaction). In addition, chemotrophs obtain their energy from chemicals, lithotrophic from inorganic compounds and organotrophic from organic compounds. Bacteria are also classified by the source carbon that they utilize: heterotrophic, from organic sources or autotrophic, from carbon dioxide. They can also be classified by whether or not they stain (based on the structure of their cell walls) with crystal violet dye: gram-negative or gram-positive.

LP6103-8 Aerobic culture
An aerobic culture is a laboratory procedure where a sample of tissue or fluid from a patient is placed in or on growth media (agar, broth) in the presence of oxygen to induce the proliferation of potentially infectious agents (bacteria, fungi, viruses). Microbial growth is documented and the organisms are identified to determine whether or not a pathogen is present.Once a pathogen is identified, specific testing techniques can be used to determine drug susceptibilities for assistance in treatment. 564-5 Colony count [#] in Specimen by Visual count
Part Descriptions
LP16817-6 Colony count
Enumeration by direct count of viable, isolated bacterial, archaeal, or fungal CELLS or SPORES capable of growth on solid CULTURE MEDIA. The method is used routinely by environmental microbiologists for quantifying organisms in AIR; FOOD; and WATER; by clinicians for measuring patients' microbial load; and in antimicrobial drug testing.
