7-Hydroxyfluphenazine is one of the metabolites of fluphenazine, a drug used to treat schizophrenia which can be administered in both oral and depot formulations. Oral fluphenazine is rapidly metabolized, and the steady-state level of the parent drug is significantly lower than its metabolites, including 7-hydroxyfluphenazine. In contrast, after depot administration, the steady-state level of the parent drug is higher than its metabolites. Patients who are being transitioned from an oral to depot formulation must be closely monitored for increase in symptoms or relapse. PMID: 7918346
