Part Descriptions
LP14277-5 Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus
Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV), also referred to as Blue-Ear Pig disease, causes significant disease and can lead to reproductive failures such as weak fetuses, mummified fetuses, abortions or still borns. PRRSV is an RNA virus and belongs to the order Nidovirales, family Arteriviridae and the genus Arterivirus. PRRSV is spread among all ages of pigs and herds through direct and indirect contact. PRRSV is considered one of the most economically important infectious agents in the swine industry worldwide. The continual changing genomic characteristics of the various strains of this virus make testing of herds an important part of disease management. PMID: 26646630

Veterinary medicine:
Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) is an enveloped, positive-sense, single-stranded RNA virus of the Afteriviridae family. PMID: 26984724 PRRSV was first identified in North America in the 1980s. Another genotype of PRRSV spread through Europe from 1990 to 1992. The two genotypes vary from one another by 40% and have since spread all over the world. PMID: 12967485 Sus scrofa is the only species of pig that is a natural host to PRRSV. Symptoms of PRRSV in adult pigs include reduced appetite, fever, premature farrowing and abortion, death in up to 10% or more of sows, loss of balance, circling, and falling to one side. Symptoms of PRRSV in litters include stillborn pigs, high pre-weaning mortality, mummified pigs, variable sized weak-born pigs, and edema around the eyes. In weaned pigs, symptoms of PRRSV include loss of appetite and lethargy, obvious failure to thrive, labored or rapid breathing and/or respiratory distress, blotchy reddening of the skin, and rough hair coats. PRRSV exhibits a tropism for macrophages, lungs, and lymphoid tissue during acute infection, and persists in the tonsils and lung macrophages. The destruction of macrophages impacts cellular immunity and damages mucosal surfaces. Diagnosis of PRRSV can be determined by cell culture, reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and indirect staining of a pre-prepared monolayer of infected cells (IPMA and IFA). IgM to PRRSV can be detected in pigs within 7 days of infection and IgG to PRRS can be detected within 14 days of infection.[http://www.oie.int/fileadmin/Home/eng/Our_scientific_expertise/docs/pdf/PRRS_guide_web_bulletin.pdf] Measuring IgA and IgM against PRRSV in piglets can determine that the infection is active, since IgA and IgM do not cross the placenta. IgG to PRRSV in piglets could indicate active infection, or antibodies that were passed from the sow to the piglet since IgG does cross the placenta.
