Part Descriptions
LP262510-3 Encephalomyocarditis virus RNA
Encephalomyocarditis virus (EMCV) is a small non-enveloped, positive single-strand RNA virus that belongs to the Picornaviridae family. EMCV is known to have infected voles, squirrels, elephants, swine, wild boar, racoons, antelope, lions, birds, several species of non-human primates and humans. EMCV is found all around the world. Mice or rats are believed to be its natural reservoir. EMCV is transmitted in contaminated food, water and diseased carcasses. EMCV elicits an extreme inflammatory response that may enhance other virulence factors. EMCV virulence is linked to sex, age and animal species of the infected host as well as the EMCV viral strain itself. Symptoms of EMCV infection include myocarditis, diabetes, reproductive and neurological disorders. Severe symptoms rarely occur in humans infected with EMCV. PMID: 2272247
