Detection of IgM antibodies against Hantavirus serotypes in serum or plasma based on immunofluorescent patterns to assist in the diagnosis of hantavirus infections. The term was created for, but not limited in use to, the submitter's test kit, EUROIMMUN indirect immunofluorescence test for Hantavirus, which detects but does not differentiate between IgM antibodies against the following Hantavirus serotypes: Hantaan (HTNV), Sin Nombre (SNV), Puumala (PUUV), Dobrava (DOBV), Seoul (SEOV), and Saaremaa (SAAV).

Hantavirus is a genus of viruses transmitted by rodent urine, saliva or feces. Hantavirus infections may result in Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) or Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS). Due to variations in the host rodent species, diverse hantavirus strains can be found throughout the world. In conjunction with history of exposure, serologic assays are used to detect the presence of hantavirus antibodies. The specific assays used varies from lab to lab, but may include enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), Western blot assay, or rapid immunoblot strip assay (RIBA).[CDC: hantavirus] Source: Regenstrief LOINC
