Patients with active systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) have lower levels of monocyte programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression compared to healthy controls as well as patients with SLE who are in remission. In addition, TNF-alpha inhibitors may play a role in suppressing PD-L1 with a consequent increase in autoantibody production. Persistence of low PD-L1 expression in patients with SLE may be associated with more severe disease as well as lupus nephritis. PMCID: PMC3402971 Source: Regenstrief LOINC
