GISAID currently contains open-access genomic data for influenza viruses and SARS coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Whole-genome sequences of SARS-CoV-2 were made available on GISAID beginning in January 2020 to enable global genomic epidemiology and real-time surveillance of new COVID-19 viral strains. Sequencing is a method used to determine the sequence of individual genes, larger genetic regions (i.e. clusters of genes or operons), full chromosomes or entire genomes. Historically, most sequencing has been performed using the chain termination method developed by Frederick Sanger in 1977.
