Part Descriptions
LP14798-0 Acanthamoeba sp
Acanthamoeba species are ubiquitous soil and freshwater protozoa that have been associated with infections of the human brain, skin, lungs and eyes. Species of Acanthamoeba are distinguished mainly in the form of cysts, and include the following; those marked with an asterisk are known to cause infections. A. astronyxis*, A. castellanii*, A. comandoni, A. culbertsoni*, A. divionensis, A. griffini, A. hatchetti*, A. healyi, A. jacobsi, A. lenticulata, A. lugdunensis*, A. mauritaniensis, A. palestinensis*, A. pearcei, A. polyphaga*, A. pustulosa, A. quina*, A. rhysodes*, A. royreba, A. terricola (renamed A.castellanii Poussard), A. triangularis, and A. tubiashi. Diseases caused by Acanthamoeba include amoebic keratitis and encephalitis. The latter is caused by Acanthamoeba entering cuts and spreading to the central nervous system.

- The PrThr property is used for LOINC terms whose results are reported using an ordered categorical scale, regardless of whether or not an internal threshold was used to make that determination. This change was approved by the Laboratory LOINC Committee in June 2016.; Updated Answer list type from NORMATIVE to EXAMPLE because the Answers in the list (Positive, Negative) are only examples of possible answers and not an exclusive list

87758-9 Naegleria fowleri DNA [Presence] in Specimen by NAA with probe detection
Part Descriptions
LP17151-9 Naegleria fowleri
Naegleria fowleri is a free-living amebae that can infect the central nervous system (CNS) and cause life-threatening disease. The route of entry and clinical course of infection varies with the type of ameba involved. N. fowleri live in warm, stagnant fresh water lakes and nonsterile water. The amebae is acquired by entering through the nasal sinuses, traveling along the olfactory nerve through the skull and into the central nervous system (CNS). N. fowleri causes rapidly progressive primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM) and is typically fatal within several days of exposure. Most diagnoses are made after death due to the rarity of the condition. PMID: 22520593

Part Descriptions
LP35795-1 Balamuthia mandrillaris
Balamuthia mandrillaris is an amoeba found in soil, dust, and water that causes cutaneous disease and granulomatous amebic encephalitis. While infections with B. mandrillaris are rare, they have a high fatality rate (>90%). PMID: 25709948
