Quantitative detection of Hepatitis B virus (HBV) core-related antigens, including HB core, pre-core (also known as p22cr) and envelop antigens, in serum or plasma by immunoassay methods, such as chemiluminescent enzyme immunoassay (CLEIA). This test does not distinguish between the three antigens. Testing is performed for the diagnosis of chronic and acute hepatitis B and to monitor treatment. Studies have shown that HBVcr Ag levels in serum correlate with serum HBV DNA and intrahepatic covalently closed circular DNA (cccDNA). PMID: 31075974

Hepatitis B core-related Ag (HBcrAg) consists of three proteins, including hepatitis B envelope antigen (HBeAg), hepatitis B core antigen (HBcAg), and a 22-kDa precore protein (p22cr). All three proteins are coded by the precore/core region of the HBV genome. The precore protein is an HBV DNA-negative (empty) particle. In serologic testing, HBcrAg is used as a surrogate marker to predict the disease progression and treatment responses of chronic HB patients. PMID: 31075974 Source: Regenstrief LOINC
