Version 2.78

Description

Arylsulfatase C, also known as steroid sulfatase or steryl-sulfatase, primarily functions to convert steroid precursors to estrogen during pregnancy. It is encoded by the STS gene, which is located on chromosome Xp22.31. Deletion or mutation of the STS gene causes X-linked ichthyosis, a keratin disorder that causes exfoliation in the first few weeks after birth and later, in affected boys, large, polygonal, dark brown scales, especially on the neck, extremities, trunk, and buttocks.
