Staphylococcus epidermidis
Active
Description
Staphylococcus epidermidis, a coagulase negative staphylococcus (CoNS), has been historically viewed as an innocuous commensal organism of human skin. However, it has emerged as an important nosocomial opportunistic pathogen and accounts for up to 90% of all hospital-acquired CoNS infections. S. epidermidis is able to form biofilms on indwelling devices, and isolates are often resistant to a multitude of antibiotics which complicates effective treatment.
