Test to detect allergy to rice, the allergen code is f9. All rice grown in the United States and most of that grown in other countries belongs to the species Oryza sativa in the family Poaceae. Rice is a staple food for almost half the world's population. Rice may be cultivated in flooded fields(paddy-grown) or hill-grown(lower quality) on tropical or subtropical terrain. White rice has the husk, bran and germ removed. Brown rice has only the inedible husk removed. Proteins with molecular masses of 14-16, 26, 33, and 56 kDa are potentially allergeneic in patients with rice allergy. Extensive cross-reactivity occurs among pollen of the different species within the Poaceae occurs frequently. All Rice grown in the United States and most of that cultivated in other countries is of the species Oryza sativa L. Some 20 to 25 species of Oryza are known.

Rice may uncommonly induce symptoms of food allergy, asthma, rhinitis, eczema and urticaria in sensitised individuals.

Symptoms reported in Rice-allergic individuals include abdominal cramping and similar pain, nausea, vomiting, rhinitis, rhinoconjunctivitis, dyspnoea, asthma, contact urticaria, atopic dermatitis, dermatitis, angioedema and anaphylaxis.
