Zea mays
Active
Descriptions
A plant species of the family Poaceae. It is a tall grass grown for its seed, corn, used as food and animal fodder. Source: National Library of Medicine, MeSH 2006
Maize/corn kernels grow on long "ears" at the leaf axils of this unusual plant. The original habitat was probably South America or Mexico, where Maize was the staple diet of the American Indian. Maize is now grown almost anywhere summers are reasonably warm.
Maize may moderately often sensitise or induce symptoms of food allergy in sensitised individuals. Allergic symptoms reported have included abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, rhinitis, asthma, angioedema, atopic dermatitis, and anaphylaxis.
