The Piper nigrum bush produces stone fruits; green when unripe, then red and finally yellowish. Black pepper is made from the unripened fruit as it begins to turn red.

Spices may uncommonly induce symptoms of food allergy in sensitised individuals. Symptoms are usually mild but may vary from itching and smarting of the lips and mouth to anaphylaxis. Copyright Copyright © 2006 Phadia AB. Source: ImmunoCap, ImmunoCap
