Version 2.77

Descriptions

Toxic shock syndrome (TSS) is associated with strains of Staphylococcus aureus that produce TSS toxin-1 (TSST-1) and/or staphylococcal enterotoxin B (SEB) (or Staph enterotoxin C). TSST-1 is associated with approximately 65% of TSS cases- (most of the menstruation associated cases), whereas SEB is associated with approximately 20% of cases. Individuals lacking antibodies to TSST-1 or to SEB (approximately 10% and 20% of adults, respectively) are presumed to be at highest risk of TSS. (Information is from Focus Diagnostics). Patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) are frequently colonized with Staphylococcus aureus (S.a) strains that secret exotoxins such as Staphylococcus enterotoxins A, B, C , D, E and Toxic shock syndrome toxin (SEA, SEB, SEC, SED, SEE and TSST), where SEA and SEB seem to be the most important ones involved in the IgE synthesis.
