Bordetella pertussis
Active
Description
Bordetella pertussis is a species of Bordetella that causes pertussis, also known as whooping cough. Pertussis causes coughing paroxysms, whooping, and post-tussive emesis. Vaccination against B. pertussis can prevent disease; however, B. parapertussis, another species of Bordetella, also causes illness that is often indistinguishable from pertussis, and the B. pertussis vaccine does not protect against B. parapertussis infection. PMID: 28514288 Both B. pertussis and parapertussis are strictly aerobic, non-motile, gram-negative coccobacilli that are difficult to isolate using traditional culture techniques. Diagnostic techniques include culture, molecular assays, and serology. PMID: 26242280 Source: Regenstrief LOINC
