Carnitine esters
Active
Description
Esterified carnitine in blood. L-carnitine is essential for the transport of free fatty acids into mitochondria where fatty acids are oxidized from fat to produce energy. Low carnitine levels in skeletal muscle, liver, heart, and kidneys result in decreased ability of these tissues to utilize long chain fatty acids as an energy source. Low levels indicate muscle carnitine weakness or secondary carnitine deficiency associated with renal failure, cirrhosis, and many other defects. Source: Regenstrief Institute
