Version 2.77

Description

Bordetella parapertussis is a species of Bordetella and is increasingly being identified as the cause of pertussis-like symptoms, including coughing paroxysms, whooping, and post-tussive emesis. Originally thought to cause milder illness than B. pertussis, more recent studies have shown that the two species have similar severity. B. pertussis vaccination does not protect again B. parapertussis infection and in fact, may actually increase susceptibility to parapertussis. PMID: 28514288 B. parapertussis is a strictly aerobic, non-motile, gram-negative coccobacillus and that is difficult to isolate using traditional culture techniques. Diagnostic techniques include culture, molecular assays, and serology. PMID: 26242280 Source: Regenstrief LOINC
