Descriptions

Central Sleep Apnea (CSA) is a pattern of breathing characterized by deep inspiratory cycle interchanged with complete cessation of breathing. It is caused by problems with how the brain controls breathing.

The Central apnea index (CAI) is calculated by dividing the number of events by the number of hours of sleep. (CAI values are typically categorized as 5-15/hr = Mild; 15-30/hr = Moderate; and > 30/h = Severe.) Source: Regenstrief LOINC

The central apnea index (CAI) is calculated as the number of central apnea events per hour of sleep. Source: Regenstrief LOINC , PMID: 17803008
