Version 2.78

Description

Helmet cells are helmet-shaped red blood cell fragments without a central pallor. Helmet cells are a subset of fragmented red cells, the other two being schistocytes and triangular cells. Fragmented red blood cells (rbcs) occur when the rbcs undergo rips and tears from fibrin strands in microcirculation or trauma occurring in macrocirculation. Helmet cells are seen in fragmentation anemias. Information from CAP.org, 2005 Surveys and Anatomic Pathology Education Program-Hematology, Clinical Microscopy, and Body Fluids; accessed 2007 08 20.
