CD 34+ cells can regenerate the bone marrow after transplant. Source: Regenstrief Institute

CD34 molecule is a cluster of differentiation molecule present on certain cells within the human body. It is a cell surface glycoprotein and functions as a cell-cell adhesion factor. It may also mediate the attachment of stem cells to bone marrow extracellular matrix or directly to stromal cells. CD34 is also the name for the human gene that encodes the protein. Normal bone marrows contain a small percent of cells carrying the CD34 antigen. Such cells can also be detected in the circulating blood and their numbers can be increased with the various marrow stimulating factors. It is a very important cell type for patients under consideration for bone marrow transplant because these cells include the hematopoetic stem cells needed to re-generate the bone marrow after it is ablated. The number of circulating CD34 is also useful in the diagnosis of myeloproliferative disorders and predicting which will transform to malignancy. Viable CD34 cells can be distinguished from dead ones with 7-AAD viability dye. Source: Regenstrief Help
