Descriptions

Chromogranin A, a 439 amino acid protein with a molecular weight of 49 kilodaltons, is one of a variety of water-soluble glycoproteins distributed in the secretory granules of endocrine and neuroendocrine cells. Serum CgA is an excellent marker for the diagnosis and management of patients with neuroendocrine tumors. Source: Regenstrief Institute

Human chromogranin A is a secretory protein (439 amino acids) that is produced by neuroendocrine cells. It is used chiefly as an immunohistochemical marker for normal and neoplastic neuroendocrine tissues and is observed in patients with pheochromocytoma, carcinoid tumor, neuroblastoma, and small cell lung carcinoma. Seven neuroendocrine tumors that secrete no other hormone markers, referred to as "nonfunctioning" tumors, can sometimes be detected via the serum levels of chromogranin A. Chromogranin A is more stable than serotonin, making its measurement a useful alternative to 5IHAA for the detection of carcinoid tumor. Prostate cancer patients with elevated levels of chromogranin A correlate with poor prognosis. Source: LOINC partner 1
