Descriptions
Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH or corticotropin) is a 39 amino acid polypeptide hormone synthesised from pre-opiomelanocortin (POMC). It is secreted from corticotropes in the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland in response to a corticotropin-releasing hormone. An anterior pituitary hormone that stimulates the secretion of corticosteroids and induces growth of the adrenal cortex. It is a single-chain polypeptide of about 39 amino acids, the first 24 of which are identical in all species. The 24-amino acid segment is responsible for the activity of the peptide whereas the 15-amino one confers immunological specificity. A drug, which may result in allergy symptoms in sensitized individuals. Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH or corticotropin) is a polypeptide hormone synthesized from pre-opiomelanocortin and secreted from corticotropes in the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland in response to the corticotropin-releasing hormone released by the hypothalamus. ACHT consists of 39 amino acids. It stimulates the cortex of the adrenal gland, resulting in the synthesis of corticosteroids: mainly glucocorticoids, but also mineralcorticoids and, to a lesser extent, androgens.
