Glial fibrillary acidic protein
Active
Description
Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) is an intermediate filament (IF) protein highly expressed in the central nervous system (CNS), almost exclusively in astrocytes, as well as in the peripheral nervous system (PNS). GFAP is used as a biomarker for traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) and stroke. In the presence of astrogliosis, GFAP gene activation and protein production are found to be increased. Additionally, studies have found that an increased amount of GFAP is found in serum following TBIs and stroke. PMID: 25975510 Source: Regenstrief LOINC
