Version 2.78

Descriptions

Lysozyme is an enzyme (EC 3.2.1.17), commonly referred to as the body's own antibiotic since it kills bacteria. It is abundantly present in a number of secretions, such as tears. This protein is present in cytoplasmic granules of the polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) and released through the mucosal secretions (such as tears and saliva). They can also be found in high concentration in egg white. Copyright Text is available under the Creative Commons Attribution/Share-Alike License. Lysozyme is a hydrolytic enzyme and bacteriolytic glycosidase found in all three human neutrophil cytoplasmic granules and is elevated in some cases of myelogenous, and most cases of myelomonocytic and monocytic leukemia. Revised FAB (French, American, British) criteria indicate that serum or urine lysozyme levels 3 times normal fulfill one of three criteria for the presence of M4/M5 (acute myeloid with monocytic differentiation) vs M2 (acute myeloblastic leukemia with maturation). This assay may lack specificity for the identification of acute leukemias. Serum lysozyme has been shown to be elevated in other disorders, such as tuberculosis and sarcoidosis as well as leukemia. Serum lysozyme has been proposed to monitor the progression or regression of proven sarcoidosis cases. Source: LOINC partner 1
