Descriptions
Prolactin is a hormone synthesized and secreted by lactotrope cells in the adenohypophysis (anterior pituitary gland). It is also produced in other tissues including the breast and the decidua. Pituitary prolactin secretion is regulated by neuroendocrine neurons in the hypothalamus, most importantly by neurosecretory dopamine neurons of the arcuate nucleus, which inhibit prolactin secretion. A lactogenic hormone secreted by the adenohypophysis (pitiutary gland anterior), prolactin is a polypeptide of approximately 23 kD. Besides its major action on lactation, in some species prolactin effects reproduction, maternal behavior, fat metabolism, immunomodulation and osmoregulation. Prolactin receptors are present in the mammary gland, hypothalamus, liver, ovary, testis, and prostate. Source: National Library of Medicine, MeSH 2006
Prolactin is an anterior pituitary hormone encoded by the PRL gene, synthesized and secreted by lactotrope cells in the adenohypophysis. It is also produced in other tissues including the breast and the decidua. Pituitary prolactin secretion is regulated by neuroendocrine neurons in the hypothalamus, most importantly by neurosecretory dopamine neurons of the arcuate nucleus, which inhibit prolactin secretion. Prolactin levels may be checked as part of a sex hormone workup, as elevated prolactin secretion can suppress the secretion of FSH and GnRH, leading to hypogonadism, and sometimes causing erectile dysfunction in men. Prolactin measurement may also be of use in distinguishing epileptic seizures from psychogenic non-epileptic seizures, as serum prolactin level usually rises following an epileptic seizure.[Wikipedia: Prolactin] Copyright Text is available under the Creative Commons Attribution/Share-Alike License.
