Description

Onchocerca is a genus of nematode (roundworm) that includes O. volvulus, the causative agent of the human disease known as River Blindness. River blindness results in vision impairment and can also cause skin disease and debilitating itching. Onchocerciasis is the second-leading infectious cause of blindness in humans. [https://www.cdc.gov/parasites/onchocerciasis/index.html] Other species of Onchocerca include O. lupi, which can cause disease in dogs, cats, and humans, O. gutturosa and O. lienalis, which affect cattle, and O. cervicalis, which affects horses.
