Cefotaxime is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. Like other third-generation cephalosporins, it has broad spectrum activity against Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria. In most cases, it is equivalent to ceftriaxone in terms of safety and efficacy. Cefotaxime sodium is marketed under various trade names including Claforan (Sanofi-Aventis). Cefotaxime is a third generation cephalosporin, with activity similar to ceftizoxime and cefotaxime. It is used in the treatment of respiratory tract infections, skin and skin structure, bone and joint, urinary tract, gynecologic as well as septicemia, and meningitis. It is effective against most gram-negative bacilli (not Pseudomonas) and gram-positive cocci (not enterococcus) and against many penicillin-resistant pneumococci. Source: Regenstrief Institute
