Version 2.77

Description

Deletions on the long arm of chromosome Y are known to be associated with male infertility, frequently due to non-obstructive idiopathic azoospermia or severe oligozoospermia. Tiepolo and Zuffardi (Human Genetics, v34,1976) reported that 0.5% of idiopathic sub infertile individuals were found to carry cytogenetically visible deletions on the Yqll region. They called this region the 'azoospermia factor (AZF)'. To date, three primary AZF regions have been named: AZFa, AZFb, and AZFc. The AZFa region is found within Yq11.21, AZFb and AZFc more distally within Yq11.22, 23. Molecular techniques, including multiplex PCR and Y-chromosome locus-specific probes, may used to detect small non-overlapping interstitial deletions within the AZFa, AZFb, and AZFc regions.
