Desmosome
Active
Description
Desmosomes, Greek for 'fastening bodies', are the adhesive connections between cells in tissues that are mechanically stressed during normal function such as the myocardium, bladder, gastrointestinal mucosa and skin. PMCID: PMC2742091 The strong adhesive quality of desmosomes enables them to be differentiated from other intercellular junctions. When the adhesive property of desmosomes fails disease processes such as pemphigus vulgaris can develop. The shift between high and low adhesion is controlled by protein kinase C. Desmosomes also regulate cell proliferation, differentiation and morphogenesis by sending signals to molecules. PMID: 17854763 Source: Regenstrief LOINC
