Lindane
Active
Description
Lindane is an organchlorine insecticide and fumigant that poisons soil-dwelling and plant-eating insects. The Environmental Protection Agency cancelled the use of lindane in the dairy and agricultural industries and it is no longer produced in the United States. It is currently an ingredient in lotions, creams, and shampoos to eradicate lice and mites in humans. Lindane is highly toxic and symptoms of acute exposure in humans include mental and motor retardation, central nervous system excitation, convulsions, respiratory failure, pulmonary edema, dermatitis, loss of balance, grinding of teeth, and hyper-irritability. Lindane is extremely toxic to fish, bees and aquatic invertebrates. It persists in fresh and salt water ecosystems. Lindane enters plants when it is directly applied to them, from contaminated water, and from vapors of lindane.[http://pmep.cce.cornell.edu/profiles/extoxnet/haloxyfop-methylparathion/lindane-ext.html] Source: Regenstrief LOINC
