Version 2.78

Description

Retinol is the alcohol form of Vitamin A. Humans are unable to naturally synthesize retinol, so it must be obtained through digestion of retinol-rich foods. Retinol aids in vertebrate development, growth, cell differentiation, spermatogenesis and immunity. This vitamin is predominately stored in the liver as a retinyl ester in the form of retinyl palmitate. After storage in the liver, the retinol then assimilates into the nearby blood plasma in order to transport the vitamin to its target cell. The typical concentration of retinol in blood plasma should be between 1 to 2 micromolar per liter. PMID: 24662164 Source: Regenstrief LOINC
