Acetylcholinesterase
Active
Descriptions
In biochemistry, cholinesterase is a term which refers to one of the two enzymes:Acetylcholinesterase (EC 3.1.1.7) (AChE), also known as RBC cholinesterase, erythrocyte cholinesterase, or (most formally) acetylcholine acetylhydrolase, found primarily in the blood and neural synapses Pseudocholinesterase (EC 3.1.1.8) (BChE or BuChE), also known as plasma cholinesterase, butyrylcholinesterase, or (most formally) acylcholine acylhydrolase, found primarily in the liver Both of these compounds catalyze the hydrolysis of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine into choline and acetic acid, a reaction necessary to allow a cholinergic neuron to return to its resting state after activation. The difference between the two types of cholinesterase has to do with their respective preferences for substrates:the former hydrolyses acetylcholine more quickly; the latter hydrolyses butyrylcholine more quickly. An enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of ACETYLCHOLINE to CHOLINE and acetate. In the CNS, this enzyme plays a role in the function of peripheral neuromuscular junctions. EC 3.1.1.7. Source: National Library of Medicine, MeSH 2006
Acetylcholinesterase, an enyzme (EC 3.1.1.7) (AChE) that controls synaptic and neurohumoral cholinergic activity by hydrolyzing the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, is also known as RBC cholinesterase, erythrocyte cholinesterase, or (most formally) acetylcholine acetylhydrolase. The ACHE gene is mapped to chromosome 7q22. AChE is found primarily in the blood on red blood cell membranes, in neuromuscular junctions, and in neural synapses. Two main clinical diagnostic uses are: 1) a second trimester screening test for fetal neural tube defects using amniotic fluid and, 2) in the general population, to detect past exposure to organophosphate insecticides with resultant inhibition of the enzyme using blood.
