Description

Arachidonate (AA) is an essential polyunsaturated omega-6 fatty acid that is produced from dietary linoleic acid. AA is located in human fat, liver, brain, and glandular organs and is a mediator of inflammation. The AA within the phospholipids of cell membranes is the surface where the production of a number of biologically active compounds occurs. A few of the compounds produced includes prostaglandins, thromboxanes, and leukotrienes which regulate processes including platelet aggregation, blood clotting, smooth muscle contraction, leukocyte chemotaxis, inflammatory cytokine production, and immune function.[PubChem: 444899] AA is released from the cell membrane when acted upon by phospholipases and then metabolized by cyclooxygenase (COX) producing the prostanoids prostaglandin and thromboxane A2, which can stimulate or mitigate inflammation. PMID: 21508345 One of the benefits of the Omega-3 fatty acids for patients with inflammatory disease is believed to be their selective modification of the metabolism of AA by the omega-3 fatty acids that results in a reduced amount of inflammation.
